Job summary

Academics Ltd in Minehead is seeking a patient, experienced SEND English Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one English tuition for a secondary-aged learner in Minehead. This in-person role focuses on English, SEND/SEMH support, and adapting teaching to meet individual needs to help boost literacy and confidence.

The tutor will support the secondary English curriculum, including Language and Literature, and assist with GCSE preparation and exam technique where appropriate.

Qualifications

• Strong English knowledge at secondary level.
• Experience teaching or tutoring secondary English.
• Experience supporting learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
• Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs.
• Enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references and the right to work in the UK.

Responsibilities

• Providing personalised one-to-one English tuition tailored to the learner's individual needs and abilities.
• Supporting learning across the secondary English curriculum, including English Language and English Literature where appropriate.
• Developing reading comprehension, writing, spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary skills.
• Supporting GCSE English preparation, revision and exam technique where appropriate.
• Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback to parents/carers and other professionals involved in the learner's education.
• Following safeguarding procedures and promoting the welfare of the young person.

Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND English Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one tuition to a secondary-aged young person in Minehead.

The successful tutor will have strong English subject knowledge and experience supporting secondary-aged learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and/or social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. You will be confident adapting your teaching style, pace and resources to meet individual learning needs, helping the learner develop their literacy skills, build confidence and make progress at a suitable pace.

Experience supporting young people with anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or challenging behaviour would be highly desirable. The tutor should be able to make English accessible and engaging, breaking down tasks into manageable steps and creating a calm, supportive environment where the learner feels comfortable developing their skills.

This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.

The role may involve:

• Providing personalised one-to-one English tuition tailored to the learner's individual needs and abilities.

• Supporting GCSE English preparation, revision and exam technique where appropriate.
• Using engaging texts, practical activities and the learner's interests to encourage participation.
• Supporting learners who may have experienced barriers to mainstream education.
• Helping the learner develop confidence, resilience, independence and positive attitudes towards English.
• Supporting learners who may experience SEMH needs, anxiety, disengagement or challenging behaviour.
• Using positive behaviour strategies and appropriate de-escalation approaches where required.
• Creating a calm, structured and supportive learning environment.
• Monitoring progress and providing appropriate feedback to parents/carers and other professionals involved in the learner's education.
• Building a positive and trusting relationship with the learner.
• Maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality.

Essential requirements:

• Strong English subject knowledge at secondary level.
• Experience teaching or tutoring secondary-level English.
• Experience supporting learners with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
• Experience providing one-to-one or personalised educational support is desirable.
• Ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs.
• Experience supporting learners who may face barriers to mainstream education is desirable.
• Experience supporting challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.
