Job description

Drapers’ Academy is looking for a committed and ambitious teacher to join lead our SEND team as SENCo. If you are passionate about effective inclusion and its power to transform lives; if you are able to both challenge others and respond positively to challenge, then Drapers’ Academy will offer you the opportunity to make a real difference to some of our most vulnerable young people’s lives.

Applicants will have significant and relevant middle leader experience and a proven track record of working to support and challenge pupils with SEND. The SENCo will:

  • Lead, develop and line manage the SEND Faculty, through a skilled approach that supports and challenges the team.
  • Monitor, evaluate and continually improve the quality of planning, teaching and support of all members of the SEND team.
  • Model outstanding teaching and lead collaborative planning and development, including the sharing of resources and best practice within the Faculty.
  • Be responsible for ensuring all pupils with an EHC plan and those on the SEND register are supported and challenged to achieve their best and are able to access their curriculum effectively.
  • Ensure you are up to date with the latest information around statutory obligations as well as best practice as it relates to young people with SEND.
  • Liaise with the LA to ensure statutory obligations are met and appropriate support for pupils is accessed swiftly.

Start Date: September 2025 or January 2026 ( If anyone is interested for a September start, please email admin@drapersacademy.com and one of our team will be in contact this week).

Drapers’ Academy has much to offer:

• Summer 2024: Best ever GCSE and A Level results

• Nationally recognised GCSE progress

• March 2020: Ofsted Good for all aspects including the Sixth Form

• A clear vision to deliver high standards of education and serve our community

• State-of-the-art campus surrounded by acres of countryside

• Committed, generous sponsors: The Drapers Company and Queen Mary University

• Fully subscribed through the school

• An environment that promotes innovation

• Opportunities to teach across KS3, 4 and 5

• Free access to the Employee Assistance Programme offering individual support, information and advice

• Centralised detention model

• Committed and supportive Senior Leadership Team

• Our own 6th Form area dedicated to A Level teaching

• Membership of the Havering Teacher Training Partnership and the Ambition Institute to support ECT induction, teacher training and CPD of staff at all levels

• An employer who invests in the development of staff with a commitment to ongoing professional development through Instructional Coaching

• Staff access to our gym

• Close proximity to the M25 (Junction 28, Brentwood) and the A12 for ease of access from London, Kent, Essex or Hertfordshire and ample secure on-site parking

• Short bus journey from Harold Wood train station and Elizabeth line tube station

It is our practice to recruit staff to permanent positions via direct application rather than agency placement.

We welcome staff who wish to visit the school in advance of application. To arrange this, please contact slucey@drapersacademy.com

We reserve the right to close this vacancy early upon appointment of a successful candidate.

Drapers’ Multi-Academy Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Appointments are subject to enhanced DBS clearance, an online check, and other relevant employment checks.

Safeguarding

Havering Schools are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The protection of our pupils from abuse is the responsibility of all staff within our schools, superseding any other considerations. Therefore Havering Schools comply with the Department for Education ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’ guidance.

It is an offence to apply for a post which involves engaging in regulated activity relevant to children if you are barred from doing so. Please be advised that, again in line with ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’, shortlisted candidates (who wish to accept an invite to interview) will be required to submit, prior to their interview, a self-declaration of their criminal record or information that would make them unsuitable to work with children. Upon submission of this information, online checks may be carried out.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974; the successful applicant will be expected to undertake an enhanced DBS disclosure check. Having a criminal record will not necessarily debar you from obtaining a position with the School.

Equal Opportunities

Havering Schools aim to promote and ensure equality of opportunity and equal treatment for all. We are committed to equal opportunities in employment regardless of gender, marital status, race, colour, nationality (including citizenship), ethnic or national origins, disabilities, age, sexual orientation, responsibility for dependants, religious or political affiliation and trade union activities. All matters related to employment are decided on the basis of qualifications, merit and business need.
