Job summary

St Joseph’s Specialist Trust is seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to support students aged 5-19 with social communication difficulties and complex learning needs. The role involves assisting with literacy, numeracy and daily living skills, and supporting communication through Makaton and other aids.

Comprehensive training, an apprenticeship pathway funded by the Trust, and a supportive team environment are provided. Salary reflects the 36-hour week timetable and term-time adjustments.

Qualifications

• Empathy, compassion and resilience to support students with complex needs.
• Literacy and numeracy skills to support learning and record-keeping.
• Strong communication skills with children, families and professionals.
• Patience and calm under pressure when supporting students with challenging behaviours.

Responsibilities

• Small classes of 8-13 students, grouped by ability and social needs.
• Support with core subjects (literacy, numeracy, PSHE) and daily living skills.
• Help students communicate using Makaton, signs, symbols, or communication aids.
• Provide guidance when students feel anxious, emotional or frustrated and help manage feelings and behaviour.
• Work as part of a skilled, dedicated team with training and mentoring.
