We are looking for a dedicated and experienced SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Bury, providing support to primary and secondary-aged pupils with a variety of special educational needs.

You will work closely with pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups, helping them engage with learning, build confidence and develop essential life skills. The role involves creating a positive and nurturing environment where every pupil is supported to achieve their individual goals.

Previous experience working with children or young people with SEN is essential. You must also be comfortable assisting with personal care, including toileting, changing and hygiene routines, where required.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is caring, patient and committed to helping children and young people overcome barriers to learning and develop greater independence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide individual and small group support to pupils with additional needs, including autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, SEMH and communication difficulties.
  • Assist teachers in delivering adapted learning activities and interventions that reflect pupils' individual needs and EHCP targets.
  • Support pupils with personal care, including toileting, washing, dressing, changing and continence needs, ensuring dignity, privacy and respect at all times.
  • Help pupils develop communication, social interaction, self-care and independent living skills.
  • Encourage participation in classroom activities and promote a calm, safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Assist with mobility, positioning and physical support where needed, following individual care plans and school guidelines.
  • Help pupils manage emotions and behaviour through positive support, appropriate communication and de-escalation techniques.
  • Work alongside teachers, SENCOs, therapists and other professionals to support pupils' learning, development and wellbeing.
  • Observe and document progress, monitor behaviour and wellbeing, and communicate any concerns to the relevant staff.
Requirements
  • Essential: Previous experience supporting children or young people with special educational needs in an educational, care or specialist setting.
  • Desirable: Experience supporting personal care routines, including toileting, changing and personal hygiene.
  • Desirable: A Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning, Childcare, Health and Social Care, or a related subject.
  • Knowledge of additional needs, including autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, communication difficulties and complex needs.
  • A caring, patient and flexible approach, with the ability to develop trusting relationships with pupils.
  • Confidence assisting with personal care while respecting pupils' dignity, privacy and confidentiality.
  • Ability to follow individual care plans, safeguarding requirements and health and safety procedures.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with school staff and external professionals.
  • Willingness to undertake relevant training, including safeguarding, personal care and medical or physical support.
  • An enhanced DBS check, including the children' barred list where applicable, or willingness to obtain one.
Benefits
  • Salary based on experience.
  • Access to ongoing training and professional development.
  • Opportunity to build specialist experience supporting children and young people with additional needs.
  • Work within a supportive specialist school environment.
  • A fulfilling role where you can contribute to pupils' confidence, learning, independence and overall wellbeing.
