Job summary

TeacherActive is seeking an experienced SEN Teacher to join a specialist SEND school in Sutton, South London, working with Post-16 learners up to 19 years old.

The role is full-time, temporary/long-term with QTS/QTLS or equivalent and requires Enhanced DBS clearance. You will plan differentiated lessons, support communication and life skills, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to prepare learners for adulthood.

Qualifications

  • QTS, QTLS or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
  • Experience teaching in SEND/special school – essential.
  • Experience teaching Post-16 SEND students – essential.
  • Experience with Post-16 learners up to 19 – essential.
  • Experience supporting learners with Autism, PMLD, SLD and complex SEND.
  • Knowledge of sensory curriculum approaches and intensive interaction.
  • Experience using Makaton, AAC, communication switches or other alternative communication methods.
  • Experience supporting students with physical disabilities and complex medical needs.
  • Knowledge of EHCP outcomes.
  • Calm, patient, compassionate and adaptable approach.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • Enhanced DBS and register on the DBS Update Service – essential.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging, highly differentiated lessons for Post-16 SEND students.
  • Support learners with PMLD, SLD, autism and complex learning needs.
  • Develop communication, independence and functional life skills.
  • Prepare Post-16 learners for greater independence and adulthood.
  • Support sensory regulation, social interaction and emotional wellbeing.
  • Use Makaton, AAC devices, communication switches and sensory-based approaches.
  • Work with Speech and Language Therapists, OTs, physiotherapists and healthcare professionals.
  • Support learners with physical disabilities and mobility needs.
  • Support feeding programmes, positioning, wheelchair use and personal care routines.
  • Contribute towards and review EHCPs.
  • Record and monitor progress using small-step achievement frameworks.
  • Create a positive, structured and safe learning environment.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and carers.
  • Follow safeguarding procedures and prioritise student wellbeing.

TeacherActive is currently seeking a dedicated and experienced SEN Teacher to join a specialist SEND school in the Sutton area, working specifically with Post-16 students up to 19 years old.

The school supports autistic learners with multiple and complex barriers to learning. Students may also have severe learning difficulties, sensory processing needs, physical disabilities and complex medical requirements.

The successful SEN Teacher will work primarily with Post-16 learners, helping them develop their communication, independence, life skills, social interaction and emotional wellbeing as they prepare for adulthood.

As an SEN Teacher, you will plan and deliver highly differentiated learning tailored to students with PMLD, SLD, autism, sensory processing needs and complex medical requirements. You will work alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team including Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, physiotherapists, support assistants and healthcare professionals.

The successful SEN Teacher must have:
  • QTS, QTLS or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification
  • Previous teaching experience within a SEND/special school – essential
  • Experience working with Post-16 SEND students – essential
  • Confidence and experience teaching young people up to 19 years old – essential
  • Experience supporting learners with Autism, PMLD, SLD and complex SEND
  • Knowledge of sensory curriculum approaches and intensive interaction
  • Experience using Makaton, AAC, communication switches or other alternative communication methods
  • Experience supporting students with physical disabilities and complex medical needs
  • Knowledge and experience of working towards individual EHCP outcomes
  • A calm, patient, compassionate and adaptable approach
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • The right to work in the UK
  • The ability and willingness to obtain an Enhanced Child and Adult Workforce DBS and register it on the DBS Update Service – essential
