Job summary

Veritas Education Recruitment is seeking a dedicated SEN Teacher for a specialist school in Birkenhead. The role involves delivering engaging, differentiated lessons to pupils with special educational needs in a supportive, inclusive setting.

You will adapt approaches to meet individual learning needs, manage behaviour effectively, and support pupils’ academic, social, and personal development. A DBS check and eligibility to work in the UK are required.

Job Overview

We are recruiting a passionate, dedicated, and enthusiastic SEN Teacher to join a specialist school in Birkenhead, Merseyside. The school provides a supportive, structured, and inclusive learning environment for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities. Pupils may require additional support with their learning, communication, behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and personal development. The successful candidate will deliver engaging, accessible, and differentiated lessons while adapting teaching approaches to meet the individual needs of pupils.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging, creative, and differentiated lessons tailored to pupils with special educational needs.
• Adapt teaching methods, resources, and activities to meet a range of individual abilities and learning needs.
• Create a positive, inclusive, and well-structured classroom environment that promotes learning and participation.
• Build strong, trusting relationships with pupils to encourage engagement, confidence, and positive attitudes towards education.
• Use effective classroom and behaviour management strategies to maintain a calm, safe, and purposeful learning environment.
• Support pupils in developing their academic, social, emotional, communication, and independent living skills.
• Plan learning activities that support pupils' individual targets and EHCP outcomes where applicable.
• Monitor, assess, and record pupil progress, using assessment to inform future planning and interventions.
• Provide appropriate challenge and support to ensure all pupils make progress from their individual starting points.
• Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, pastoral staff, SENCOs, therapists, parents/carers, and external professionals.
• Contribute to individual education plans, curriculum development, assessments, and school-wide initiatives.
• Promote pupils' confidence, resilience, communication, independence, and wider personal development.
• Maintain high expectations of behaviour, effort, attendance, and achievement.
• Follow school safeguarding, health and safety, and child protection procedures at all times.

Requirements

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification (essential).
• Experience teaching pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.
• Previous experience working within a SEND, SEMH, alternative provision, or specialist school setting is highly desirable.
• Strong classroom and behaviour management skills.
• The ability to differentiate and adapt teaching to support pupils with a range of abilities and additional needs.
• A creative, engaging, and flexible approach to teaching and learning.
• A calm, patient, resilient, and consistent approach.
• Excellent communication, organisational, and teamwork skills.
• A genuine commitment to supporting pupils who may have experienced barriers to education.
• Understanding of safeguarding and the importance of promoting pupil wellbeing.
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.
• You must have legal right to work in the UK.
• You must be willing to attend a registration interview.
