Job summary

Queen Alexandra College is seeking a Learning Support Assistant to promote independence for students with complex needs. You will support learning, personal care, and social development, liaise with specialists, and help create inclusive learning environments.

The role includes safeguarding commitments and training participation, with interviews on 17th September 2026. Based in Harborne, Birmingham, the post offers full-time hours, a salary of around £18,973–£21,053 per year, and access to

Qualifications

  • Level 2 – English & Maths (equivalent).
  • Experience of working effectively with young adults with barriers to learning.
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good IT skills, including word processing, Excel and Microsoft Programmes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with young adults with barriers to learning, including those who may present behaviours that challenge.
  • Experience of SEN learners with moderate to severe learning difficulties and ability to provide the associated curriculum, approaches and strategies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, parents, carers, and other external contacts, at all levels, using a variety of media.
  • Demonstrate learning strategies for people with visual impairment and autism and/or complex disabilities.
  • Familiar with communication methods and access technology for learners with visual impairment and other disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Promote learning and independence for students.
  • Record progress against targets; use evidence like photos and witness statements.
  • Attend team meetings; adapt to different learning styles.
  • Support tutors to create differentiated resources.
  • Undertake tutorials and set targets with assigned students.
  • Provide social and emotional support and update plans and risk assessments.
  • Assist during break and lunch times to ensure safety and engagement.
  • Assist with personal care and access to campus and activities.
  • Use technology to access student information and communicate with external contacts.
  • Participate in mandatory training and peer mentoring.
