Job summary

Tradewind Recruitment is seeking a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to support pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs at a specialist primary school. You will provide 1:1 and small-group support, build positive relationships and help pupils feel safe, understood and ready to learn.

The role is full-time and long-term with potential temp-to-perm; drivers with own vehicle preferred. There are opportunities for CPD and ongoing consultant support, with safeguarding checks required.

Qualifications

• Has previous experience supporting children with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour or additional needs.
• Has experience working with primary-aged children or a genuine understanding of their developmental needs.
• Is confident supporting emotional regulation and managing challenging situations.
• Understands the importance of trauma-informed and relationship-based approaches.
• Is calm, patient, resilient and consistent in their approach.
• Can build positive relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
• Is passionate about helping vulnerable children develop confidence and reach their potential.
• Is a driver with access to their own vehicle.
• Can commit to a full-time position.

Responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small-group support to primary-aged pupils with SEMH needs.
• Build positive, trusting relationships with children, acting as a consistent and positive role model.
• Support pupils with emotional regulation, self-esteem and developing positive coping strategies.
• Use appropriate de-escalation techniques to manage challenging behaviour calmly and safely.
• Encourage engagement in learning, helping children overcome barriers within the classroom.
• Support pupils with their academic, social and emotional development.
• Promote positive behaviour, clear boundaries and a structured learning environment.
• Work closely with teachers and other professionals to provide consistent, individualised support.
• Help create a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
