Job summary

Axcis Education Recruitment seeks a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to support pupils with complex emotional and behavioural needs in a primary setting. You will work closely with teachers, therapists and external agencies to promote wellbeing and academic progress.

The role involves one-to-one and small-group support, differentiating lessons, monitoring pupil progress, and contributing to IEPs and risk assessments in Walton, Surrey.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent.
  • Proven experience supporting children with SEMH or SEND needs.
  • Strong understanding of child development and trauma-informed practice.
  • Excellent communication and empathy; able to stay calm under pressure.
  • DBS clearance (or eligibility to obtain).

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with SEMH difficulties using agreed strategies.
  • Assist the class teacher in delivering differentiated lessons and adapting resources.
  • Monitor and record pupil behaviour, progress, and attendance; contribute to IEPs and risk assessments.
  • Foster positive relationships and model coping skills and resilience.
  • Liaise with parents, staff, and external professionals to coordinate care.
  • Support SEMH policy implementation and safeguarding procedures.
  • Participate in CPD and team meetings.

Job description

SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Walton, Surrey

Hours: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 08:00-15:30

Salary: Paid to scale

We are seeking a dedicated SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to support pupils with complex emotional and behavioural needs in a dynamic primary setting. The successful candidate will work closely with teachers, therapists, and external agencies to create a safe, inclusive learning environment that promotes wellbeing and academic progress.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support for pupils with SEMH difficulties, implementing agreed-upon strategies and interventions.
  • Assist the class teacher in delivering differentiated lessons, adapting resources to meet individual needs.
  • Monitor and record pupil behaviour, progress, and attendance; contribute to IEPs and risk assessments.
  • Foster positive relationships, modelling coping skills and resilience techniques.
  • Liaise with parents, senior staff, and external professionals to ensure coordinated care.
  • Support the implementation of school-wide SEMH policies and safeguarding procedures.
  • Participate in regular CPD and team meetings, sharing insights and best practices.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
  • Level 3 or higher Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent).
  • Proven experience supporting children with SEMH or SEND needs.
  • Strong understanding of child development, trauma-informed practice, and behaviour management.
  • Excellent communication, empathy, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • DBS clearance (or eligibility to obtain).
Desirable
  • Training in CBT, mindfulness, or related therapeutic approaches.
  • Experience working within a multi-disciplinary team.
