SEMH Teacher (Food Technology) – Secondary School

We are seeking experienced, passionate, and resilient SEMH Teachers specialising in Food Technology to join specialist secondary provisions in Newcastle and Sunderland.

These are excellent opportunities for dedicated education professionals who can inspire and engage young people with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs through the delivery of practical and engaging Food Technology lessons. The successful candidates will demonstrate a strong understanding of SEMH, trauma-informed practice, and differentiated teaching approaches while creating a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment.

The Role:

• Plan, prepare, and deliver high-quality Food Technology lessons tailored to the individual needs and abilities of students with SEMH
• Create a safe, supportive, and engaging classroom environment that promotes positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and academic progress
• Adapt teaching strategies, curriculum content, and resources to meet the diverse learning needs and emotional wellbeing of students
• Build positive, trusting relationships with students, demonstrating empathy, patience, consistency, and understanding
• Work collaboratively with teaching assistants, support staff, pastoral teams, SENCO, and external agencies to support student progress
• Implement behaviour management strategies that are trauma-informed, de-escalation focused, and consistent with the school's behaviour policy
• Monitor, assess, and record student progress, providing constructive feedback, setting targets, and celebrating achievements
• Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, CPD opportunities, and whole-school activities

The Ideal Candidate Will:

• Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent recognised teaching qualification
• Have proven experience teaching Food Technology at secondary level, ideally within a specialist or mainstream setting
• Have experience working with students with SEMH, challenging behaviour, trauma, or additional needs
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of trauma-informed practice, de-escalation techniques, restorative approaches, and positive behaviour support
• Be calm, resilient, patient, and able to remain professional and composed in challenging situations
• Have excellent classroom management skills and the ability to create structured, predictable, and consistent routines
• Be creative, adaptable, and resourceful in planning and delivering engaging, practical, and differentiated lessons
• Have strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with vulnerable students and their families
• Be committed to safeguarding, inclusion, equality, and promoting positive mental health and wellbeing
• Have a genuine passion for making a positive and lasting difference in the lives of young people with SEMH
• A relevant qualification or training in SEMH, behaviour management, safeguarding, or trauma-informed practice would be desirable
