Job summary

Milk Education is recruiting SEMH Learning Support Assistants to support pupils with SEMH needs across Morpeth. You will work one-to-one and in small groups, helping pupils develop resilience, self‑confidence, social skills, and independence within a nurturing environment.

You will collaborate closely with teachers to adapt activities, implement IEPs and behaviour support plans, and create a positive classroom climate. Prior experience in education or related settings is beneficial.

Qualifications

• Recent experience supporting children or young people with SEMH or additional learning needs in education, care, youth work, or similar settings.
• Experience with pupils displaying challenging behaviour, attachment needs, ADHD, Autism (ASD) or trauma-related needs is advantageous.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to build positive relationships with pupils and colleagues.
• A calm, empathetic, resilient, and flexible approach to supporting young people.
• Knowledge of positive behaviour support, de-escalation techniques, and trauma-informed practice.
• Genuine commitment to helping children overcome barriers to learning and achieve positive outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs.
• Help pupils develop emotional resilience, self-confidence, social skills, and independence.
• Work with teachers to adapt learning activities and ensure access to the curriculum.
• Implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs), behaviour support strategies, and personalised intervention plans.
• Create a positive, structured classroom environment that promotes engagement and wellbeing.
• Use restorative and trauma-informed approaches to manage behaviour and support pupils through challenging situations.
• Develop strong, professional relationships with pupils, families, and staff.
• Liaise with teaching staff, pastoral teams, families, and external agencies to provide consistent support.
• Celebrate achievements and encourage pupils to reach educational and personal development goals.
