Job summary

Justteachers Ltd in Ely is recruiting a dedicated Teaching Assistant to support pupils with SEMH needs in a supportive, inclusive setting. You will work closely with teachers to enable access to learning and daily routines.

The role focuses on building resilience, emotional regulation and social skills, using clear instructions, visual prompts and practical activities to reduce anxiety and promote engagement.

Qualifications

• Experience with SEMH learners in schools or similar settings.
• Good knowledge of behaviour support and calm de-escalation techniques.
• Ability to adapt approaches to individual needs and keep learners engaged.
• Qualifying training such as Level 2 Teaching Assistant, Childcare or Youth Work.

Responsibilities

• Provide consistent, nurturing support to pupils with SEMH needs and help them engage with learning and routines.
• Collaborate with teaching staff to adapt activities and break down tasks for accessibility.
• Use visual prompts, clear instructions, modelling and practical activities to maintain engagement.

About the role:

A supportive and inclusive SEMH setting in Ely, dedicated to working with children and young people who require additional support with their social, emotional, and mental health needs. The provision focuses on helping learners build resilience, improve emotional regulation, and develop confidence alongside their academic progress. This role is a full-time role, with the possibility of being permanent when starting in September.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide consistent, nurturing support to pupils with SEMH needs, helping them engage positively with learning and daily routines.
• Work alongside teaching staff to adapt activities and break down tasks, ensuring learning is accessible and manageable for each individual.
• Use a range of supportive strategies – such as clear instructions, visual prompts, modelling, and practical activities – to maintain engagement and reduce anxiety or overwhelm.
• Promote positive behaviour by building trusting relationships, using de‑scalation techniques, and supporting pupils to regulate
• Encourage independence, self‑confidence, and social skills through structured support and positive reinforcement.
• Support pupils during challenging moments, helping them refocus and re‑engage with learning in a calm and constructive way.

Pre‑requisites:

• Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs in settings such as schools, alternative provisions, care, youth work, or mentoring roles.
• A good understanding of behaviour support strategies and how to respond to emotional or behavioural challenges in a calm, consistent manner.
• Confidence in adapting approaches to meet individual needs and supporting pupils to remain engaged in activities.
• Relevant training or qualifications such as Level 2 Teaching Assistant, Childcare, Youth Work, or equivalent hands‑on experience.
