Job summary

Teaching Personnel is recruiting a Functional Skills Teacher to support KS4 learners in a specialist secondary alternative provision in Salford. The role focuses on improving engagement for students facing SEMH and other barriers to education.

You will plan and deliver Functional Skills lessons, differentiate for varied needs, and work with a small class to build confidence and progress toward qualifications.

Qualifications

• QTS or equivalent teaching qualification.
• Experience delivering Functional Skills, English or Maths at secondary level.
• Understanding SEMH needs and provision challenges.
• Strong behaviour management and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver high-quality Functional Skills lessons to KS4 students.
• Differentiate learning to meet diverse abilities and needs.
• Create an inclusive classroom environment that promotes engagement and achievement.
• Support students to develop confidence, resilience, and independence.

Teaching Personnel is currently recruiting for a Functional Skills Teacher to join a specialist secondary alternative provision supporting students in Key Stage 4. This setting works with learners who face a range of barriers to education, including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), anxiety, trauma-related behaviours, attachment difficulties, emotional dysregulation, poor school attendance, and challenging behaviour.

The provision offers a structured, supportive, and therapeutic learning environment designed to re-engage students with education and prepare them for positive post‑16 destinations. Class sizes are small, allowing staff to build strong relationships with pupils and deliver highly personalised learning programmes.

Requirements

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), QTLS, or equivalent teaching qualification.
• Experience teaching Functional Skills, English, Mathematics, or a related subject at secondary level.
• Understanding of SEMH needs and the challenges faced by students in alternative provisions.
• Strong behaviour management and relationship‑building skills.
• Ability to adapt teaching methods to engage learners with diverse needs.
• A patient, resilient, and empathetic approach.
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one through Teaching Personnel.
