Job summary

British Geological Survey (BGS) in Edinburgh is seeking a Seismic Network Engineer to provide on-site field engineering support for the seismic monitoring network and oversee real-time system performance. You will monitor data quality, react to failures, and help install stations across the UK.

The role requires readiness for challenging fieldwork, security screening, and potentially access to nuclear facilities. A full UK driving licence and a relevant degree are essential.

Qualifications

  • An understanding of engineering systems in electronics, communications, IT or similar (S&I).
  • Full UK driving licence, ideally off-road experience (S&I).
  • Degree/Diploma in a relevant science/engineering discipline (S&I).
  • Good communication skills to explain engineering problems to specialists and non-specialists (S&I).
  • Ability to work across the UK and in remote outdoor locations (S&I).
  • Ability to work independently and in a team (S&I).
  • Ability to plan and prioritise work (S&I).
  • Willingness to follow health and safety procedures (S&I).
  • Knowledge of instrument testing procedures (S&I).
  • Ability to solve technical issues (S&I).
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion in geosciences (S&I).

Responsibilities

  • Provide on-site field engineering support to the seismic monitoring network.
  • Monitor quality and performance of real-time seismic data in collaboration with data analysis staff.
  • React to system failures and coordinate repairs.
  • Construct and install permanent and temporary seismic stations.
