Job summary

National Energy System Operator (NESO) is seeking a WESR hazard and risk analyst to strengthen energy-system resilience. You will deliver hazard and physical risk analyses across assets, regions, and time horizons, using both quantitative and qualitative methods to produce decision-ready insights.

The role is based in Wokingham, Warwick, or Glasgow with hybrid working options. You will collaborate with teams, mentor junior staff, and translate analyses into concrete recommendations for

Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of the UK energy system, dynamics and interdependencies
  • Strong analytical background in hazard, environmental, climate, or infrastructure risk assessment
  • Experience applying structured analytical methods to complex, real-world systems
  • Able to work with imperfect data and uncertainty to produce credible, decision-relevant insights
  • Clear communicator who can explain technical findings to non-technical audiences
  • Collaborative and delivery-focused, with the confidence to challenge assumptions constructively
  • Driven by contributing analysis that improves preparedness and resilience outcomes

Responsibilities

  • Undertake hazard and physical risk analyses across relevant energy system assets, regions, and time horizons
  • Apply and interpret quantitative and qualitative assessment methods, including scenario analysis and modelling outputs
  • Contribute to the development of integrated insights that link hazards to wider system risks and resilience capabilities
  • Produce clear, high-quality analytical outputs, briefings, and inputs to senior-level products
  • Support the team in translating analysis into actionable recommendations
  • Engage with internal teams and external partners to source data, validate assumptions, and align approaches
  • Provide coaching and technical guidance to junior team members, supporting skill development and quality assurance

The Whole Energy System Resilience (WESR) directorate strengthens whole-energy-system resilience by being a catalyst for change – turning insight into coordinated, prioritised action that reduces risk and builds capability across the system. WESR delivers this through analysis, assessments, reviews, emergency exercises, and plans that drive tangible improvements with our partners.

WESR Operates Through a Continuous Improvement Cycle That Includes
  • Learning systematically about energy system risks and resilience
  • Conducting prioritised assessments to generate insights and advice
  • Translating insights into actions that drive tangible improvements

WESR is building its capability to maintain a strategic, system-wide view that integrates insights across all teams in the directorate and translates them into prioritised risks, workplans, and engagement strategies. This enables each team to focus on developing deep expertise and excellence in a specialist area.

This role can be based from Wokingham, Warwick, Glasgow, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

Key Accountabilities

This role is to deliver robust hazard and physical risk analysis that underpins WESR’s understanding of energy system resilience, and supports the development of evidence-based insights and recommendations

What You'll Get

A competitive salary of £57,000 - £62,000 pa dependent on experience and capability

  • You will receive a bonus based on company performance
  • 26 days annual leave as standard
  • A competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%
  • Annual Enrollment to NESO Savings Plan, when you save between £20- £500 a month from your take-home pay, we will pay a 50% matching contribution.
