Job summary

EDF Energy Limited is seeking a Section Engineer for the Sizewell C project. The role covers enabling works and earthworks, with responsibility for design, planning, procurement and execution of early civils scope including SSSI Crossing, ground improvements and sea defence.

You will lead safety, quality and productivity sections, supervise on-site teams, and ensure compliance with project specifications. A strong focus on coordination with designers and subcontractors is essential.

Qualifications

  • HNC/HND/Degree in an electrical or engineering discipline preferable.
  • CSCS card required.
  • SSSTS or SMSTS qualification desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews Method Statements and Risk Assessments and makes improvements as appropriate.
  • Carries out field audits and confirms the sufficiency of control documentation.
  • Production and implementation of Permits to Work including Permit to Dig, Confined Space and Hot Works Permits.
  • Guides & coaches less experienced staff in technical requirements and techniques of setting out.
  • Production of as-built drawings & records for every element of the works involved in.

Section Engineer

The scope of the Enabling Works and Earthwork is the design, planning, procurement and execution of some of the early SZC civils scope including - SSSI Crossing, ground improvements, dewatering, diaphragm walls, sea defence, marine bulk import facility (MBIF), beach landing facility (BLF), construction drainage outfall and bulk Earthworks.

Principal Accountabilities, Activities and Decisions

Health Safety & Environmental
  • Reviews Method Statements and Risk Assessments and makes improvements as appropriate
  • Production of task briefing sheets and carries out associated briefings
  • Carries out field audits and confirms the sufficiency of control documentation
  • Production and implementation of Permits to Work, including Permit to Dig, Confined Space Permits and Hot Works Permits
Engineering Control
  • Guides & coaches less experienced staff in technical requirements and techniques of setting out
  • Guides and coaches less experienced staff in resolution of construction issues, drawing on experience and accepted industry best practice
  • Read and determine in formation from drawings, schedules and specifications
Quality
  • Production of as-built drawings & records for every element of the works involved in
  • Completion of Quality check sheets and production of information for handover
  • Implements systems and processes to support construction of the works in accordance with the specification (eg Materials Approval, NCR, Handover Documentation)
  • Carries out Independent Inspections of their own section and of others
  • Carries out Site Audits to check works and documentation compliance
  • Coaches less experienced staff
  • Liaise with designer to resolve technical issues
Productivity
  • Produces a fully resourced short term programme in the accepted format / software
  • Tracks and monitors KPI compliance and recommends improvements to systems to maintain team production
  • Establishes monitors of production, translated to graphical form from the Programme to aid understanding of current status and identification of requirements for intervention
Commercial
  • Maintains accurate diary, including dialogue with external organisations (subcontractors)
  • Produces a budget from the resourced programme and monitors / reviews weekly costs
  • Manages sub-contractors
  • Understands cost and value
  • Understands what is classified as additional work and how to record this
  • Drafts correspondence to sub-contractors, suppliers and Client

Qualifications & Experience

Essential
  • HNC/HND/Degree in an electrical or engineering discipline would be preferable and/or relevant Site Experience with the Utilities / Construction Industry
  • CSCS card
  • SSSTS or SMSTS qualified
Desirable
  • Targeting and actively progressing professional accreditation (eg ICE, IHT)
  • Strong knowledge and management of construction process in one or more of the following areas: Earthworks/Drainage, Pavement, Structures, Roadworks

  • Able to work on own initiative and seek out opportunities in line with level of responsibility

  • Track record of solution orientated approach to issue resolution

  • Commercial awareness with knowledge of both budgetary and Financial control.
