Job summary

Balfour Beatty is seeking a hands-on Section Engineer for the Lower Thames Crossing project in the UK. You will own engineering activities across a defined section, translating plans into safe, high‑quality delivery on site.

You will support the team with setting out, QA, health and safety, and programme awareness. You will mentor junior engineers, manage activity control, and contribute to commercial and progress reporting while maintaining a relentless focus on safety and quality on a

Qualifications

  • Experience carrying out complex setting out on construction or civil engineering projects.
  • Good understanding of quality processes, including Activity Control Plans, tolerances, specifications and project records.
  • Awareness of health, safety and environmental requirements, with the confidence to identify hazards and implement appropriate controls.
  • Ability to use programme information, including short‑term and 13‑week programmes, to plan and monitor progress.
  • Commercial awareness, including understanding of key contract documents and subcontractor or supplier requirements.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to give clear direction, liaise with site teams and support a collaborative working environment.
  • A practical, organised and solutions‑focused approach, with a commitment to delivering work safely, right first time and to programme.

Responsibilities

  • Carrying out complex setting out and establishing primary control, ensuring works are delivered accurately and in line with project requirements.
  • Coaching and supporting junior engineers and site colleagues in setting out techniques and engineering best practice.
  • Producing Activity Control Plans, maintaining quality records and using specifications and contract documents as key reference points.
  • Identifying, raising and progressing Non‑Conformance Reports and Technical Queries, offering practical solutions where required.
  • Preparing Method Statements, Risk Assessments and Temporary Works Briefs, while actively promoting safe systems of work.
  • Supporting site inductions, accident reporting and proactive hazard identification to help maintain high health, safety and environmental standards.
  • Producing weekly programmes, communicating targets to the workforce and measuring progress against agreed KPIs.
  • Collating weekly measure information, monitoring wastage, completing labour and plant reconciliations and identifying additional works for notification.

About the role

Our Balfour Beatty Highways business has a terrific opportunity for a Section Engineer to join our £1.2 billion Lower Thames Crossing project, consisting of 43 bridges, including viaducts, 17km of complex Highways construction, complex utility diversions, and a scheme-wide, industry leading approach to carbon reduction . Balfour Beatty Highways maintain, manage and operate major highway networks across the UK and support local authorities creating communities where people want to live work and play. As a Section Engineer you will take ownership of engineering activities across a defined section of works. This is a hands‑on site‑based role where you’ll help translate plans into safe, high‑quality delivery, supporting the project team with setting out, quality control, health and safety, programme management and commercial awareness.
