Job description

You will be a registered nurse/midwife with a minimum of 12 months post-qualified experience, a passion for public health (Health Visiting), and a desire to make a difference. Willingness to take the next step? The Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) Health Visitor training may be for you. As a Health Visitor (SCPHN) in Enfield, every day is different, with responsibilities including home visits, parent groups, and making a real difference to children, families, and communities. You will play a key role in developing the Healthy Child Programme, preventing social exclusion and deprivation, and addressing important public health issues.

SCPHN Studying at Level 7 Degree with University of Hertfordshire. This application is for an NHS-sponsored, fixed 12-month salaried placement with Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Upon success, you will be guided to apply for a full-time one-year place at the University of Hertfordshire. Applicants should have previously studied at least level 6.

Must have: - full driving license - access to a car (essential) - availability to start in September 2025 - ability to travel to and from the University of Hertfordshire.

Main duties of the job

To fulfill the requirements of the SCPHN program by attending university course dates and practice placement days according to university regulations.

Health Visiting and School Nursing teams belong to the Enfield 0-19 Children's Community Service, commissioned by the Local Authority (Public Health), within North Middlesex University NHS Trust. The service is based at The Civic Centre, Silver Street, Enfield, with good public transport links, including trains to Enfield Town and Enfield Chase. The teams consist of health visitors, school nurses, early years practitioners, staff nurses, and assistants, working collaboratively with GPs, midwives, schools, social care, and voluntary organizations to ensure the best outcomes for children and young people.

You will work for the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust, focusing on Enfield. The public health 0-19 service is located in Enfield council buildings, close to the town center, with various amenities and accessible public transport. Enfield is diverse, offering opportunities to make a positive impact on many lives. The four health visiting teams provide a wide range of services in partnership with various professionals.

Job responsibilities

1. Clinical Responsibilities

  • Develop skills and competencies to meet NMC Registration Standards for Specialist Community Practice with the support of Practice Assessor and Supervisor.
  • Link theoretical knowledge from university to practical situations with guidance from mentors.
  • Understand current healthcare legislation, policies, and guidelines relevant to the pathway (HV or SN).
  • Manage workload, develop team leadership and management skills.
  • Adhere to university regulations regarding academic work and conduct.

2. Responsibility for Patients

  • Attain the academic and clinical skills required to practice as an NMC-registered SCPHN.
  • Attend university and placement days as per regulations.
  • Work with mentors to develop competencies for registration.

3. Policy and Service Development

  • Understand healthcare legislation and policies relevant to the pathway.
  • Work within organizational policies and regulations.

4. Resources and Management

  • Develop workload management and team leadership skills.

5. Information and Research

  • Develop skills to meet NMC standards and link theory to practice.

General Responsibilities

Adhere to infection control policies, ensure high standards of practice, collaborate with infection control teams, and monitor practice quality. Take responsibility for health and safety at work, complying with statutory requirements and co-operating with the employer.

Education & Professional Qualifications
  • Current NMC registration for nursing or midwifery
  • BSc (Hons) Nursing degree at level 6 or above
Experience
  • At least 12 months post-registration experience in community or hospital nursing
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience managing difficult situations and conflict resolution
Skills and Aptitudes
  • Ability to study independently at postgraduate level
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
