Job title: Scientific Services Manager – Synergy

Synergy is seeking a Scientific Services Manager to join a global pharmaceutical company based in Oxford.
Synergy provides a range of on-site scientific services for pharmaceutical clients, collaborating closely to deliver core scientific activities.
This pivotal role involves managing the day-to-day operations of invitro laboratories at the Oxford site, ensuring high standards of H&S (escalating issues to the Novo Nordisk H&S representative), quality, operational excellence, and championing continuous improvement. The Manager will also line-manage a mid-sized team of research and lab assistants conducting scientific activities and invitro experiments.
This position is split approximately 50% lab-based activities supporting scientific projects and 50% team management of research and lab staff.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Line management of the research team, including 1:1s, goal setting, performance reviews, development, wellbeing, and absence management, as well as managing the operations support team and liaising with client representatives.
- Planning, managing, and allocating tasks within the research team in coordination with relevant stakeholders.
- Participating in the recruitment of new team members collaboratively with NNRCO representatives.
- Serving as the primary contact for both Synergy and client teams, including management and research staff.
- Ensuring all activities align with Synergy and NNRCO values and behaviors.
- Communicating progress and issues to stakeholders and escalating problems appropriately.
- Maintaining laboratory readiness for experiments, implementing best practices, and monitoring KPIs.
- Coordinating with facilities teams for lab operations.
- Managing lab consumables, including ordering and stock management.
- Supporting procedures such as SOPs and risk assessments, ensuring compliance with quality and safety policies.
- Promoting good laboratory practices and safety culture, escalating non-compliance issues.
- Contributing to health and safety procedures related to risk assessments, COSHH, and waste disposal.
- Leading continuous improvement initiatives with support from the CI Manager.
- Managing storage, inventories, autoclave operations, and related activities.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a scientific discipline.
- Significant laboratory experience, including lab management and documentation.
- Proven people management skills with small to mid-sized teams.
- Proficiency with LIMS or similar IT platforms.
- Good understanding of COSHH and health & safety regulations.
- Experience developing SOPs and risk assessments.
- Flexibility and ability to handle multiple responsibilities.
- Strong collaboration, problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills.
- Experience with lean methodologies, CI, OE, supply chain management.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Relevant safety qualifications and CI/OE accreditation.
- Customer service orientation.
