Job summary

South Gloucestershire & Stroud College is seeking a proactive Science Technician to support Biology, Chemistry and Physics teaching by ensuring safe, efficient laboratories and well-prepared materials for practical lessons across A Levels, GCSEs and Access to HE.

You will work with staff to prepare demonstrations, manage stock, uphold health and safety standards, and support learners in a collaborative science team across college campuses.

Qualifications

• A Levels or degree qualification in scientific subjects.
• Experience working as a technician in education or industry.
• Strong knowledge of laboratory health and safety procedures.
• Excellent organisational and planning skills.
• Strong IT and technological skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Prepare laboratories, equipment, chemicals and materials for practical lessons.
• Support Biology, Chemistry and Physics practical activities.
• Ensure safe storage, handling and disposal of chemicals and biological waste in line with CLEAPSS and government guidance.
• Maintain laboratories and preparation areas to a high standard.
• Develop, test and prepare practical demonstrations when required.
• Manage laboratory inventories, stock control and ordering processes.
• Arrange equipment servicing and undertake minor repairs where appropriate.
• Support lecturers, students and project work during practical sessions.
• Maintain and review risk assessments for practical activities, field trips and events.
• Assist with open days, field trips and other departmental activities.
• Provide health and safety advice within laboratory environments.
