Job summary

The Francis Crick Institute is seeking a Science News Editor to uncover, shape and share the Crick’s story of discovery. You will transform complex biomedical research into compelling stories that inspire audiences and build the Crick’s profile.

You will drive editorial direction across print and digital channels, lead a writing team, and oversee The Crickmagazine. This role requires outstanding editorial judgement, scientific understanding and the ability to engage diverse audiences.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline or equivalent experience.
• Outstanding portfolio of scientific articles and features.
• Experience as a science journalist or editor with strong editorial production skills.
• Ability to tailor writing styles for diverse audiences.
• Capability to evaluate editorial, scientific, ethical and societal merits of a story.

Responsibilities

• Develop a deep understanding of the Crick’s research, strategy and direction with scientists and colleagues across the institute.
• Research, write, commission and edit content making complex biomedical discoveries engaging and accessible for public, media, donors and policymakers.
• Ensure written science content upholds the highest editorial standards including accuracy, integrity, creativity and inclusivity.
• Oversee the writing team and collaborate with scientists, illustrators, designers, photographers and freelancers.
• Lead and develop the Crick’s News and Features webpages and related social posts; edit The Crickmagazine twice yearly online/print publication.
• Oversee strategic media coverage to increase visibility and reputation of Crick science nationally and internationally.
