Job summary

New Scientist, London HQ, is seeking a Deputy News Editor to commission and edit world-class science and technology stories. You will shape our news coverage and strategy, and prepare reporters for success in a fast-paced environment.

The role demands strong digital experience, a track record of exclusives and analytics-driven storytelling, and the ability to drive a culture of ambitious journalism. Three days per week in the London office.

Qualifications

Significant experience editing science/tech journalism (not academic journals).
Experience setting strategy/direction for editorial teams.
Proven track record commissioning and editing exclusive, agenda-setting journalism.
Experience with breaking news and major stories in a high-quality brand.
Ability to manage and mentor journalists and use audience data to inform decisions.

Responsibilities

Commission, edit and publish world-class science and technology news stories.
Collaborate with reporters on exclusives, investigations, breaking news and analysis.
Line-manage reporters, giving feedback and support.
Help set the editorial direction of the news team and identify key areas to pursue.
Ensure daily must-read news coverage and maintain editorial voice.
