Job summary

West Sussex County Council seeks a part-time Crossing Site Assistant to help children and pedestrians cross safely at designated sites in Chichester. The role requires clear communication, vigilance, and the ability to stop traffic in varied conditions, with a duty to promote a friendly, professional service.

DBS check and health clearance will apply. Salary is £13.28 per hour, with term-time only hours (7.91 per week) at Drayton Depot, serving Jessie Younghusband and Parklands School crossing

Qualifications

• Ability to understand and carry out procedures for safely stopping traffic.
• Good oral communication with children and colleagues, and other adults.
• Good perception and knowledge of car stopping times, including weather effects.
• Ability to remain calm when challenged by drivers or pedestrians.
• Basic literacy and numeracy to follow detailed written instructions and record information.

Responsibilities

• Understand and carry out procedures for safely stopping traffic.
• Communicate clearly with children and colleagues during crossings.
• Accurately assess stopping times and respond to changing conditions.
• Remain calm under pressure while interacting with drivers and pedestrians.
• Follow written instructions and record necessary information as part of the role.
• Familiarity with the Highway Code and its applications.
