Job description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Plans and coordinates speech/language services and staff. Performs skilled technical work in the evaluation and treatment of persons with speech/language disorders. Performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF CLASS

  • Under the clinical supervision of the speech/language senior and the general supervision of the Relates Services Coordinator, an employee in this class is responsible for comprehensive diagnostic and management services for persons with communication disorders, as well as supervising speech services and staff.
  • Work includes evaluation procedures to determine speech/language disorders and functional levels regarding receptive/expressive language.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Performing the following tasks may place you at risk for acquiring Hepatitis B virus.

  • Responsible for prescriptions and maintenance of augmentative speech aids and peripheral equipment.
  • Assists in planning and coordinating in-service training for staff, parents, and others involved in speech/language therapy.
  • Participates in staff conferences to evaluate and plan treatment methods for students with speech/language disorders.
  • Oversees student records regarding status and treatment procedures.
  • Reviews and checks all written work for accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Performs diagnostics, therapeutic services, and maintenance of records, similar to a speech/language pathologist.
  • Positions and transfers students as necessary.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to plan, assign, and assist in clinical supervision of the speech department.
  • Good knowledge of principles, methods, materials, and aids used in speech/language therapy.
  • Knowledge of augmentative communication systems and aids, such as signs, symbols, and electronic prosthetic devices.
  • Familiarity with current literature and sources in the speech/language therapy field.
  • Skill in planning, evaluating, and demonstrating therapeutic exercises, and dealing effectively with difficult personalities.
  • Ability to evaluate speech/language and communication disorders and determine appropriate therapy.
  • Skill in generating professional reports like diagnostics and case summaries.
  • Knowledge of proper body mechanics and lifting techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • NYS Certificate as a Teacher of the Speech and Hearing Handicapped.
  • Master's degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited university, including 375 hours of supervised clinical experience.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology from ASHA.
  • License in Speech Pathology issued by the State of New York.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid NYS Driver's License at hire, maintained throughout employment, and adherence to agency policies when driving.
  • Documentation of current Mantoux tuberculosis test prior to employment and annually thereafter.
  • Unsupervised or unrestricted physical contact with consumers; criminal background check required.
  • At least 15 hours of staff development training annually.
