Job summary

National Grid is recruiting a SCADA & Control Lifecycle Engineer to join our lifecycle team. This role can be based from Warwick, Leeds, London, Bristol or Derby offices and offers a flexible hybrid working model.

You will help shape SCADA, substation automation, protection and control systems while integrating cyber security requirements across OT environments. We are looking for engineers with experience in SCADA, Protection & Control, or related control technologies.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• Experience in electricity transmission, distribution or critical infrastructure environments.
• Knowledge of SCADA, substation automation and OT security standards.

Responsibilities

• Support the lifecycle management of substation control and OT cyber assets.
• Contribute to SCADA, digital substation and network modernisation initiatives.
• Develop and maintain engineering standards, technical specifications and guidance documents.
• Work with internal stakeholders, suppliers and industry partners to identify and assess new technologies and solutions.
• Support asset strategies and roadmaps; analyse asset performance and lifecycle information to support investment decisions.
• Deliver cyber security requirements within OT environments and provide technical advice to teams.

Job Purpose

National Grid is transforming the way we manage SCADA, control systems and digital substation technologies across our transmission network.

As a SCADA & Control Lifecycle Engineer, you'll help shape the future of SCADA, substation automation, protection and control systems, while supporting the integration of cyber security requirements within operational technology (OT) environments.

Working within the Lifecycle team, you'll support the development of technical standards, asset strategies and future technology roadmaps that ensure our network remains safe, secure and resilient.

This is an excellent opportunity for engineers with experience in SCADA, Protection & Control, Control Systems or Substation Automation who are looking to broaden their expertise and influence the future direction of National Grid's control technologies.

What you'll do

• Support the lifecycle management of substation control and OT cyber assets.
• Contribute to SCADA, digital substation and network modernisation initiatives.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of engineering standards, technical specifications and guidance documents.
• Work with internal stakeholders, suppliers and industry partners to identify and assess new technologies and solutions.
• Support technical assurance and Type Registration activities for new and existing asset types.
• Contribute to the development of asset strategies and technology roadmaps.
• Analyse asset performance, risk and lifecycle information to support investment and replacement decisions.
• Support the delivery of cyber security requirements within operational technology environments.
• Provide technical advice and support to engineering, project and operational teams.
• Build strong relationships across the business and share knowledge with colleagues and stakeholders.

About you

We're looking for a motivated engineer who enjoys solving technical problems, influencing future engineering decisions, and working collaboratively across multiple disciplines.

You will have:

• A degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Control Systems or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
• Experience working within electricity transmission, distribution, or critical infrastructure environments (e.g. water, gas, rail).
• Membership of, or a desire to work towards membership of, a relevant professional institution.
• Experience in one or both of the following areas:
• Protection and Control Engineering.
• SCADA, substation automation or operational technology environments.
• An understanding of engineering asset management and lifecycle principles.
• The ability to analyse technical information and make evidence-based recommendations.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• A proactive approach to learning, continuous improvement, and collaborative working.

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:

• Knowledge of substation automation and digital substation technologies, including IEC 61850.
• Experience of Operational Technology (OT), Industrial Control Systems (ICS), or SCADA environments.
• Asset lifecycle management within a regulated industry.
• Technology assurance, equipment qualification, or Type Registration processes.
• HVDC, FACTS, or other advanced power system technologies.
• Data-driven asset management and performance analysis.
• Awareness of OT security standards and frameworks, such as IEC 62443 and IEC 62351

What you'll get

A competitive salary around £55,000 - £65,000 – dependent on capability

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
