Role Description

SAP Integration & Development Architect Liverpool To own the end-to-end technical architecture and delivery approach for Princes EDI, B2B integration and SAP-connected services, while providing hands-on engineering capability across SAP Integration Suite, SAP BTP, interfaces and ABAP.
The role will ensure that integrations with customers, suppliers, logistics providers and internal platforms are secure, resilient, supportable and reusable. It will strengthen internal technical ownership, reduce avoidable dependency on third parties and support the transition from legacy point-to-point integration towards governed API-led, event-driven and clean-core patterns where these are appropriate.

Role positioning and Scope
  • Owns solution architecture and technical design integrity for enterprise EDI and B2B integration services.
  • Acts as a hands-on architect: able to design, develop, review, debug and assure solutions rather than operating only as a governance role.
  • Covers customer, supplier, third-party logistics, warehouse, finance and other SAP-connected integration flows.
  • Works across the current SAP estate and future SAP/BTP roadmap, including acquisitions, divestments, migrations and BAU change.
  • Provides technical leadership to two team colleagues and coordinates specialist partners without transferring architectural ownership to them.
  • Partners with Enterprise Architecture, SAP functional teams, Infrastructure, Information Security, Service Management and delivery teams.

Role Requirements

Key Accountabilities
EDI and B2B integration architecture
  • Define and maintain the end-to-end architecture, standards and roadmap for EDI, B2B integration, trading partner connectivity and managed VAN services.
  • Design message flows, canonical models, mappings, routing, error handling, monitoring and reconciliation controls.
  • Lead technical design for trading partner onboarding and change, from external message standard through middleware to the relevant SAP application process.
  • Apply appropriate standards including EDIFACT, ANSI X12, XML, JSON and APIs, together with protocols such as AS2, SFTP and HTTPS.
  • Ensure designs address availability, recoverability, security, auditability, supportability and business continuity.
  • Drive standardisation and reuse, avoiding unnecessary partner-specific or point-to-point solutions.
SAP Integration Suite and BTP
  • Design, build and support integrations using SAP Integration Suite, with particular focus on Cloud Integration and API Management.
  • Provide technical ownership of BTP connectivity, including subaccounts, destinations, SAP Cloud Connector, certificates, keys and authentication patterns such as OAuth 2.0.
  • Assess when API-led, event-driven or batch/file-based integration is appropriate, including the potential use of SAP Event Mesh and Trading Partner Management.
  • Support side-by-side extension and clean-core principles, selecting BTP services only where they provide a clear and supportable business or technical benefit.
  • Contribute to governance for environments, transport/deployment, logging, monitoring, naming, versioning and lifecycle management across BTP services.
  • Maintain awareness of relevant BTP capabilities, including CAP, HANA Cloud and SAP Build, while retaining delivery depth in integration, connectivity and APIs.
SAP development and application integration
  • Develop, debug and technically assure ABAP solutions that support interfaces and integration processes.
  • Work confidently with IDoc/ALE, RFC, BAPI, BADIs, user exits, enhancement frameworks and application logs.
  • Support modern SAP development approaches including ABAP Objects, CDS views, OData services and ABAP Development Tools where applicable.
  • Trace incidents end to end, from an external message or API call through middleware, SAP interface processing and the underlying application or custom-code layer.
  • Produce or review technical specifications, code, unit tests, transport content and deployment plans.
  • Ensure custom development is proportionate, maintainable, secure and aligned with SAP clean-core and extension principles.
Engineering delivery and service quality
  • Provide hands-on technical input through discovery, design, build, system/integration testing, cutover, hypercare and transition to support.
  • Establish actionable monitoring, alerting, replay and reconciliation processes so failures are detected and resolved quickly.
  • Lead root-cause analysis across partner, VAN, network/security, middleware and SAP boundaries; prioritise permanent correction over recurring workaround.
  • Define non-functional requirements and assure performance, volume, resilience and recoverability for critical interfaces.
  • Maintain architecture diagrams, interface catalogues, data mappings, runbooks and operational support documentation.
  • Ensure all delivery follows change, security, segregation-of-duties and release governance requirements.
Leadership, supplier and stakeholder management
  • Provide technical direction, coaching and work allocation for integration team colleagues.
  • Lead technical workshops and translate business and functional requirements into clear integration and development designs.
  • Review and challenge designs and estimates from systems integrators, VAN providers and software vendors.
  • Support commercial and technical decisions by making complexity, support implications, risks and dependencies explicit.
  • Build effective relationships with customers, suppliers, logistics providers and internal business teams during onboarding and change.
  • Contribute to recruitment, capability development, knowledge transfer and succession within the EDI/integration team.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
  • Significant hands-on experience designing and delivering SAP-connected integration solutions, not solely producing architecture documentation.
  • Strong knowledge of EDI/B2B integration concepts, partner onboarding, mapping, monitoring and production support.
  • Practical ABAP development and debugging experience, including interfaces and enhancement techniques.
  • Practical experience with SAP interfaces including IDoc/ALE, RFC/BAPI and web services or APIs.
  • Experience with an enterprise integration platform; candidates should be capable of transferring this expertise to SAP Integration Suite where their direct product experience is still developing.
  • Good understanding of REST, SOAP, OData, XML, JSON, certificates, authentication and secure application connectivity.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex issues across external partners, middleware, connectivity, SAP interfaces and custom code.
  • Ability to create clear architecture, technical design and operational documentation.
  • Strong stakeholder communication, supplier challenge and technical leadership skills.
Strongly preferred
  • SAP BTP administration and connectivity knowledge, including subaccounts, destinations and SAP Cloud Connector.
  • API Management, Trading Partner Management and/or Event Mesh experience.
  • ABAP Objects, CDS views, OData services and ABAP Development Tools.
  • Experience of both SAP ECC and SAP S/4HANA landscapes.
  • EDIFACT and/or ANSI X12 delivery experience, including common order-to-cash and logistics messages.
  • Experience applying clean-core and side-by-side extension principles.
  • Experience leading or coaching technical specialists.
  • SAP CAP development using Node.js or Java.
  • HANA or SQL development experience.
  • CI/CD, automated testing and source-control practices for integration or SAP development.
  • FMCG, manufacturing, customer fulfilment, warehousing or logistics integration experience.
  • Experience of acquisitions, divestments, carve-outs or landscape migrations.
  • Balances strategic architecture with pragmatic, hands-on delivery.
  • Takes ownership across organisational and supplier boundaries.
  • Communicates technical complexity clearly to business and senior stakeholders.
  • Challenges constructively and makes evidence-based decisions.
  • Works collaboratively while maintaining appropriate technical standards.
  • Demonstrates structured problem solving, attention to detail and a continuous-improvement mindset.
  • Builds capability in others and shares knowledge rather than becoming a single point of dependency.
Measures of success
  • Clear technical ownership and documented standards for the EDI, B2B and SAP integration landscape.
  • Faster and more predictable delivery of partner onboarding and interface change.
  • Reduced repeat incidents through effective monitoring, root-cause correction and support documentation.
  • Greater reuse of integration patterns and less avoidable point-to-point complexity.
  • Increased internal ability to design, build, assure and support SAP integrations and associated ABAP components.
  • Effective knowledge transfer from partners and reduced reliance on external suppliers for routine technical decisions.
  • Secure, resilient and supportable solutions delivered through appropriate governance.
