Job summary

Heathrow Airport Limited is seeking a Route Development Lead to set and implement a Route Development Strategy, expanding access from local to national markets through buses, coaches and sustainable travel initiatives. The role collaborates with operations, procurement and external operators to deliver the strategy and improve passenger access by public transport.

The position focuses on shaping the Sustainable Travel Zone, delivering innovative mobility solutions and influencing transport

Job Description

The Route Development Lead will lead on setting and implementing the Route Development Strategy. This strategy will be aimed at increasing catchment and delivering a strategic bus and coach network to increase colleagues and passengers coming to and from Heathrow by Public Transport.

This role will work closely with relevant other functions including operations and procurement to facilitate the delivery of the company’s vision, objectives and plans, work with external stakeholders such as transport operators and other important industry stakeholders.

Principal Accountabilities

• Lead the development and delivery of Heathrow’s bus, coach, and sustainable transport strategies, expanding access from local, regional, and national markets while increasing public transport usage.
• Shape the future of sustainable surface access by defining the vision, objectives, and roadmap for Heathrow’s Sustainable Travel Zone and related transport initiatives.
• Drive innovation in passenger transport services, including demand-responsive travel solutions and emerging technologies that enhance connectivity and customer experience.
• Collaborate with transport operators, suppliers, industry partners, and internal stakeholders to deliver route development programmes and improve network performance.
• Manage and optimise significant investment budgets, including financial planning, forecasting, revenue projections, and the delivery of cost-efficient transport solutions.
• Act as a key representative and subject matter expert for sustainable transport, building strong relationships across internal and external forums and influencing strategic transport outcomes.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• Knowledge of existing bus and coach networks, operating practices and industry
• Proven ability to meet deadlines, work collaboratively and manage through others with strong project management skills and a record of achieving deliverables
• Ability to manage third party suppliers and consultants that support delivery activities and to derive value for money with any commission
• Ability to synthesise large and complex concepts into the fundamentals and demonstrable ability to produce evidence based, accurate and incisive decision making
• Proven ability to engage at all levels, internally and externally and evidence of influencing at a senior level

Ideally, you will also have

• Experience in transport with prior experience of a regulated business environment

Working Location

Our Hybrid working approach offers the opportunity for colleagues in some roles to work from home for an average of two days a week, providing the flexibility to work in an agile way whilst ensuring we deliver for the operational needs of Heathrow . Working arrangements vary from team to team and will be confirmed during the recruitment process. You’ll need to be based in the UK and within a commutable distance to Heathrow.
