Job summary

Gateshead Council is recruiting a Roofer to undertake roofing work across the Council’s property portfolio, including repairs, refurbishment and upgrades. You will collaborate with the team to ensure safe, high-quality outcomes for residents and staff.

The role requires experience in roofing, working at height, and adherence to health and safety practices, with a flexible approach to hours and occasional out-of-hours work.

Qualifications

• Roofing experience in repairs and maintenance is required.
• Ability to work at height, on scaffolding, and in confined spaces.
• Willingness to undertake additional corporate or trade training as needed.

Responsibilities

• Undertake high quality roofing work on Council buildings, housing and schools.
• Work with other trades to deliver the service through a one front door approach.
• Liaise with customers and subcontractors to provide a responsive service.
• Record labour and material usage using electronic and paper systems.
• Follow health and safety regulations and CDM requirements.

Our construction colleagues have significant responsibility for the ongoing maintenance of one of the region’s largest property portfolios. With work spanning responsive and planned repairs, cyclical maintenance and emergency out of hours repairs, fire and building safety, disabled adaptations, asset improvement, stores, purchasing and waste, call handling and customer support, this is a high-performing team operating on the front line with a truly vital role to play in ensuring safe living and working conditions for residents and employees of Gateshead.

About the role….

You will be working as a Roofer undertaking roofing work covering repairs, refurbishment and upgrades to all property types within the Council’s property portfolio and as required in line with business need. You will undertake minor cross trade work to support the service ‘one front door approach’, be proactive in all aspects of health and safety, and work collaboratively with the team to deliver positive outcomes for our customers.

The service operates from 8am to 8pm to meet customer need, therefore, there may be a requirement for some later working. We also operate an out of hours arrangement and employees will asked to participate.

What you'll get involved in:

• To work individually or as part of a team undertake high quality Bricklaying to a range of Council buildings, housing, and schools
• To undertake works in association with other trades
• To undertake minor cross trade work to support the service ‘one front door approach’ and deliver the service customer promise
• To liaise with customers and subcontractors to provide a responsive service
• To undertake a continual programme of risk assessment in relation to your role.
• To utilise both electronic and paper-based systems to accurately record the use of labour and materials against each job
• To demonstrate excellent conduct and behaviour which promotes cross service working to achieve an excellent service provision and outcomes for customers
• To be proactive in all aspects of health and safety management to comply with current legislation, including CDM Regulations, promoting a culture of good health and safety practice within the working environment, in line with Council policies and procedures

• Roofing experience repairs and maintenance.
• Undertaking all aspects of Roofing works
• Experience of and ability to work at height, on scaffold, and in confined spaces

The Qualifications

• NVQ level 2 and Diploma in Roofing or equivalent qualification or relevant experience.
• Full driving license or access to mobility support
• Current CSCS Card or willing to work towards qualification
• Willingness to take part in any additional corporate or trade training as required
