Ellison Institute in Oxford is seeking a hands-on robotics engineer to design, build, and deploy automated systems for laboratory environments. You will integrate mechanical, electrical, software, and control disciplines to turn requirements and prototypes into reliable machines used in labs.

You will work with automation scientists and engineers through requirements, build, commissioning, and operational use, applying iterative hardware development and strict safety/configuration controls.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent practical experience in Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic, Control, or related engineering discipline.
• Experience delivering integrated robotic, automated, or electromechanical systems in operational environments.
• Strong systems engineering experience: requirements, interfaces, and verification at system level.
• Practical mechanical design with knowledge of electrical integration, software, and controls.
• Familiarity with agile or iterative hardware development and using prototypes to reduce uncertainty.
• Experience managing changes across hardware and software with configuration control.
• Ability to read electrical schematics and interpret wiring diagrams.
• Experience with machine automation software and control logic (Python, C++, PLC).

Responsabilités

• Translate workflows into system requirements, interfaces, and acceptance criteria.
• Develop integrated robotic concepts considering mechanical, electrical, software, and safety needs.
• Design mechanisms, end-effectors, fixtures, and machine structures for manufacture and servicing.
• Integrate sensors, actuators, drives, and control hardware with proper wiring interfaces.
• Adapt robot programs for mechanical integration and testing with software teams.
• Plan iterative hardware development with prototypes and design reviews.
• Maintain system interfaces, baselines, and configuration records.
• Assemble, commission, calibrate, and troubleshoot complete systems on-site and in workshop.
• Contribute to machinery risk assessments and safety-related design measures.
• Plan verification and validation for performance, reliability, and fault conditions.
• Productionise prototypes and support deployment with scientists and suppliers.
