Job summary

Ellison Institute in Oxford is seeking a hands-on mechatronics engineer for the AutoLabs team. You will span mechanical, electrical, software, and control disciplines to turn requirements into reliable laboratory automation machines.

The role emphasizes systems engineering, iterative hardware development, and collaboration with automation scientists and engineers across requirements, concept, build, and deployment.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent practical experience in Robotics, Mechatronics or related engineering field.
• Experience delivering integrated robotic or electromechanical systems.
• Practical systems engineering: requirements capture, interface definition, system verification.
• Cross-disciplinary capability across mechanical, electrical, software, and controls.
• Experience with agile or iterative hardware development practices.
• Ability to design/adapt mechanical assemblies using CAD models.

Responsibilities

• Translate workflows into system requirements, interfaces, and acceptance criteria.
• Develop machine concepts prioritising mechanical, electrical, software, control, and safety needs.
• Design mechanisms, end-effectors, fixtures, and machine structures for manufacture and maintainability.
• Specify sensors, actuators, wiring, and control hardware with experts as needed.
• Develop robot programs and control sequences for motion and fault recovery.
• Plan iterative hardware development with prototypes and quick test cycles.
• Maintain system interfaces and configuration baselines for traceability.
• Assemble, commission, calibrate, and troubleshoot complete systems.
