Job summary

Tarmac Cross Green, Leeds, is seeking a hands-on Road Surfacing Operative for our Yorkshire-wide projects. You will join a multi-skilled surfacing team, operating pavers and rollers, handling hot materials, and ensuring work complies with specifications and safety standards.

Ideal candidates have asphalt laying experience, surfacing plant tickets, and the ability to work independently or in a gang. A CSCS card and full UK driving licence are preferred. Flexible hours and locations supported.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in asphalt laying and road surfacing.
• Proven ability to operate surfacing plant with relevant plant tickets.
• Experience on larger infrastructure or motorway projects.
• CSCS card preferred; Full UK driving licence required.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a gang.
• Good communication and a proactive, hands-on attitude.
• Flexible approach to hours and locations; Health, Safety, Environment and Quality focus.

Responsibilities

• Operate road surfacing plant and equipment including pavers and rollers.
• Work with hot coated materials in live construction and highways environments.
• Lay coated materials in line with specifications and BS tolerances.
• Perform day-to-day plant checks and basic maintenance.
• Maintain high housekeeping standards on site.
• Promote safe working practices and help maintain site compliance.
• Contribute to zero-harm safety culture and team performance.

Location: Cross Green, Leeds, West Yorkshire

Experienced in road surfacing? Confident operating surfacing plant? Looking for steady work across major highways projects? If so, this could be the role for you.

We're looking for a Multi Skilled Road Surfacing Operative to join our friendly team based out of Tarmac Cross Green, Leeds, covering Yorkshire and the surrounding region. This is a hands on, safety critical role delivering high quality surfacing on some of the area's most important infrastructure projects.

What You’ll Be Doing

Reporting to the Gang Supervisor, you’ll be a key part of a multi‑skilled surfacing team delivering works safely, efficiently and to specification. Your role will include:

• Operating road surfacing plant and equipment such as pavers, rollers, tractors, chippers and associated machinery
• Working with hot coated materials on live construction and highways environments
• Laying coated materials in line with specifications and BS tolerances
• Carrying out day‑to‑day plant checks and basic maintenance
• Maintaining excellent housekeeping standards
• Playing an active role in zero harm, behavioural safety and site compliance
• Promoting safe working practices and challenging unsafe behaviours on site

What We’re Looking For

You’ll already have practical experience within road surfacing laying coated materials ideally across highways environments such as motorways, ‘A’ roads and airfields. Suitable candidates will have:

• Previous experience in asphalt laying and road surfacing
• Proven ability to operate surfacing plant, with relevant plant tickets
• Experience working on larger infrastructure or motorway projects
• CSCS card (preferred)
• Full UK driving licence
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a gang
• Good communication skills and a proactive, hands on attitude
• Flexible approach to working hours and locations
• Strong commitment to Health, Safety, Environment and Quality standards

this role is easily accessible from Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Castleford, Pontefract, Dewsbury, Batley, Morley, Garforth, Selby, Wetherby, Harrogate, York and the surrounding areas.
