Job summary

Matchtech is recruiting a Project Risk Manager for the energy sector on a hybrid 6+ month contract. The role sits with client offices in Birmingham, Derby and Bristol, offering exposure to flagship energy programmes and national impact.

You will embed within multidisciplinary teams, lead risk workshops, develop monthly risk dashboards, and support QSRAs/QCRAs. The role requires stakeholder engagement, strong risk management grounding, and a commitment to safety, decarbonisation, and on-time

Qualifications

• Strong grounding in project risk management, ideally in energy, utilities, infrastructure or engineering.
• Ability to lead risk workshops and challenge assumptions with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience developing and presenting risk dashboards and reports.

Responsibilities

• Actively integrate within multidisciplinary project teams and build relationships with Project Directors and Senior Project Managers.
• Lead and facilitate risk workshops to ensure risks are understood and managed.
• Coordinate pre-work and follow-ups to keep workshops on track with project milestones.
• Develop and present monthly project risk dashboards showing exposure, trends, and impacts on cost, schedule, safety and compliance.
• Support QSRAs / QCRAs using probabilistic methods to inform contingency and scenario planning.
• Maintain and feed data into the ARM system for monthly reporting and governance.
• Engage with the risk community to share best practice and drive continuous improvement.

Project Risk Manager - Energy Sector

Location: Hybrid (Client offices in Birmingham, Derby & Bristol)

Contract Type: Contract (6 months+)

About the Role

As the energy sector undergoes rapid transformation - from large-scale renewables to complex infrastructure upgrades - effective risk management has never been more critical. We're looking for a Project Risk Specialist who can embed themselves within high‑profile energy projects and drive robust, forward‑looking risk practices that support safe, efficient, and resilient delivery.

This is an opportunity to influence major programmes that contribute directly to the UK's energy security, decarbonisation goals, and long‑term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

• Actively integrate within multidisciplinary project teams, attending project meetings and building strong, trusted relationships with Project Directors and Senior Project Managers across generation, transmission, distribution, or renewable energy portfolios.
• Lead and facilitate risk workshops, providing constructive challenge and assurance to ensure risks are fully understood, well‑articulated, and effectively managed.
• Coordinate pre‑work and follow‑ups with stakeholders to ensure workshops are productive and aligned with project milestones.
• Develop and present monthly project risk dashboards, offering clear insights into risk exposure, trends, and potential impacts on cost, schedule, safety, and regulatory compliance.
• Support Quantitative Schedule & Cost Risk Assessments (QSRAs / QCRAs), applying a solid understanding of probabilistic techniques to help inform decisions, contingency setting, and scenario planning.
• Maintain the Active Risk Manager (ARM) system, ensuring accurate, timely, and high‑quality data feeds into monthly reporting cycles and governance forums.
• Engage with the wider risk community, sharing best practice, contributing to continuous improvement, and supporting colleagues across the energy portfolio.

About You

You bring a strong grounding in project risk management, ideally gained within the energy, utilities, infrastructure, or engineering sectors. You're confident engaging with technical and non‑technical stakeholders, comfortable challenging assumptions, and motivated by helping major projects deliver safely, sustainably, and on time.
