Job summary

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board in North Wales invites applications for a Locum Consultant Rheumatologist across Llandudno General Hospital and Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor. You will manage outpatient and inpatient work and supervise specialty trainees and allied health professionals.

The post supports service development with opportunities for a specialist interest to enhance regional care, with active involvement in teaching, audit and clinical research within a busy NHS environment.

Qualifications

• MRCP or equivalent is required and GMC registration must be current.
• On Specialist Register in Rheumatology is required.
• A relevant higher degree is desirable.
• Demonstrated ability to teach and supervise trainees is essential.

Responsibilities

• Manage outpatient and inpatient rheumatology care.
• Supervise and train specialty trainees and Allied Health/Medical staff.
• Contribute to workload planning with guideline targets for new and review patients.
• Support service development across Llandudno and Bangor sites.

Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to shape the Rheumatology Services in North Wales for a Locum Consultant Rheumatologist based across Llandudno General Hospital and Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor. The appointee will have responsibility for the management of outpatients, inpatient, supervising and training speciality trainees and Allied Health / Medical Associate professionals.

The Peter Maddison Rheumatology Centre (PMRC) was officially opened on the 4th July 2013, and is the hub for North West Wales Rheumatology Services.

The Llandudno PMRC hub delivers to a wide geographical area with a population of 250,000 and is linked to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor. The two main outpatient sites are Llandudno and Ysbyty Gwynedd. Biological and other immunosuppressant therapies are carried out in the Assessment and Therapy Unit at Llandudno

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be required to contribute to the workload of the department in line with recommendations of the Royal College of Physicians which specify six to seven new patients per clinic, ten to fifteen review patients per clinic and mixed clinics where one new patient takes the time of two review patients depending on case mix of new to review patients. The successful applicant will be required to provide high quality service. A significant contribution to the general Rheumatology service will be expected but opportunities to pursue a specialist interest of relevance to the overall service will be encouraged.

Qualifications

• MRCP or Equivalent
• GMC Full Registration
• Relevant Higher Degree
• On Specialist Register in Rheumatology

Clinical and Management Experience

• Appropriate experience in training grade posts at SpR/SR in Rheumatology
• Competent in assessment and management of all common Rheumatological conditions
• Appropriate experience in training grade posts at SpR/SR leading to accreditation or CCT/CESR or recognised equivalent in General Medicine
• Previous Rheumatology Consultant post or equivalent
• Training in the use of ultrasound in Rheumatology practice
• Relevant experience of an appropriate subspecialty interest which complements available services (eg CTD, Paediatric Rheumatology, Community Rheumatology, Sports Medicine)
• Equivalent training accepted by the College or GMC for Specialist Register

Teaching / Audit / Research Experience

• Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors
• Evidence of ability to carry out medical research and audit, and to assess research findings
• Publication of original research
• Involvement in Clinical Research projects and / or clinical trials

Skills and Abilities

• Appropriate levels of skills and abilities expected for a Consultant grade post
• Appropriate skills in specialist procedures including joint injection
• Ability to work effectively with colleagues in an MDT setting
• Ability and willingness to work within Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and NHS performance framework and targets
• Ultrasound skills
