Job description

We have been assigned by one of the UK's more prestigious NHS Trusts to help them recruit a Consultant in Rheumatology on either a Substantive or NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful Medicine department.

Department Overview

The Rheumatology Department offers both inpatient and outpatient services at both sites of the Trust, including satellite outpatient clinics. Inpatient facilities are shared with renal patients in Ward 32. The department is supported by a GP registrar (StR) and a Rheumatology Specialty Registrar, with the latter possibly having general medical commitments depending on training stage. The GP registrar is shared with Dermatology.

Day case Rheumatology services are provided at the Rheumatology Day Unit at the main site. Dedicated physiotherapy and occupational therapy staff support outpatient care and ward-based therapies, with physiotherapists having access to a hydrotherapy pool. The department also benefits from sessional chiropody and podiatry services, as well as a comprehensive orthotics service.

Six specialist nurses (4.2 WTE) manage clinics for disease assessment, management, education, biological therapies, and osteoporosis. The department utilizes a computerized system (TAMONITOR) for monitoring DMARDs, overseen by specialist nurses with clerical support. Shared care protocols are in place with the CCG for prescription and monitoring of immunosuppressives. A nurse-run helpline offers additional patient support. The Trust has two DEXA scanners, with reports provided by designated consultants, supporting the metabolic bone and osteoporosis services, which are planned for expansion at DRI in collaboration with the Metabolic Bone Centre at Sheffield.

Role Responsibilities
  • Provide, alongside other Consultants, ongoing Rheumatology services.
  • Participate in departmental management, clinical governance, and audit activities.
  • Engage in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Supervise and develop training and non-training grade staff.
  • Contribute to teaching medical students, nurses, and junior doctors.
Location and Benefits

The Trust offers a balanced lifestyle with access to big cities, market towns, and villages, all within easy travel. Excellent transport links and two international airports enhance connectivity.
