Job summary

Birds Bakery is seeking an Electrically Biased Maintenance Engineer to support our main bakery site and retail stores. You will maintain bakery equipment, drive efficiency and safety, and collaborate with the projects team on upgrades.

The role is based at Head Office Derby (travel to stores required), 45 hours/week Tue–Sat 6am–3:30pm, with on-call duties and additional pay. Experience in FMCG is beneficial and a strong emphasis on safety and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Time-served electrically biased multi-skilled Maintenance Engineer.
• Experience in food or FMCG desirable.
• 17th/18th Edition Electrical Qualification desirable.
• Health & Safety qualification such as IOSH Working Safely preferred.

Responsibilities

• Respond quickly to equipment breakdowns across bakery and retail stores.
• Carry out planned preventive maintenance (PPM) on schedule.
• Inspect and maintain electrical and mechanical systems for safety and efficiency.
• Support installation, testing and commissioning of new equipment.
• Provide cross-functional operational support across locations.

Job title: Maintenance Engineer

Hours:Tuesday - Saturday 6am - 3:30pm (45 hoursper week)

Location: Head Office, Ascot Drive, Derby, DE24 8GN(travel to retail stores will be required)

Salary: £38,000.00 – £40,529.00 per year (depending onexperience)

The position includes on-call duties with additional pay.

Purpose

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, as an ElectricallyBiased Maintenance Engineer, you will play a key role in maintaining andimproving bakery equipment to ensure smooth production and retail operations.You will support both our main bakery site and retail stores, drivingefficiency, safety, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

Maintenance & Repairs

• Respondquickly to equipment breakdowns across the bakery and retail stores,ensuring minimal disruption
• Carryout planned preventative maintenance (PPM) tasks on schedule
• Inspectand maintain electrical and mechanical systems for safety and efficiency
• Takea proactive approach to reduce downtime and prevent recurring issues
• Maintaindetailed maintenance logs and daily activity reports

Equipment & Projects

• Supportthe installation, testing, and commissioning of new equipment in thebakery and retail stores
• Assistthe projects team with store refits, bakery upgrades, and new machineryinitiatives
• Keepup to date with the latest technical developments
• Providetechnical expertise and guidance on machinery and equipment when required

Operational Support

• Provideflexible, cross-functional support to both bakery and retail teams
• Coverplanned and unplanned absences across multiple locations
• Helpreduce reliance on external contractors by providing in-house engineeringsupport
• Workcollaboratively with all departments to resolve issues efficiently

Compliance & Safety

• Ensureall work meets legislative, food safety, and engineering standards
• FollowEngineering Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at all times
• ChampionHealth & Safety and Food Safety best practices
• Conductinspections to maintain compliance and a safe working environment

Communication & Coordination

• Keepthe Engineering Manager informed of significant maintenance issues
• Buildstrong working relationships with suppliers, contractors, and servicepartners
• Collaborateacross departments to promote teamwork and efficiency

Qualifications

• Knowledgeof continuous improvement and lean manufacturing principles, ideallywithin a food production environment
• Health& Safety qualification, such as IOSH Working Safely or equivalent(preferred)
• 4weeks holiday per year, increasing incrementally to 5 weeks holiday (after5 years continuous service) plus Bank Holidays
