Residential Support Workers & Resource Workers - Children with Additional Needs
Children's Services - Middlesbrough Council
Make a real difference to a child's future.

Middlesbrough Council is looking for compassionate, resilient, and dedicated individuals to join our Children's Services as Residential Support Workers and Resource Workers.

This is a rewarding opportunity to have a lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable children and young people. You will play a vital role in helping them feel safe, build confidence, develop independence, and achieve their full potential. Whether supporting young people in one of our homes or within the community outreach service, your commitment and care can help change lives.

Opportunities Available

We currently have a range of exciting opportunities across our residential and outreach services on a full and part-time basis.

Shift Patterns

Shifts are worked in line with the needs of the service.

Colleagues working in our residential homes undertake a varied shift pattern that includes evenings, some bank holidays, alternate weekends, sleep-ins, and waking nights.

Colleagues working in our community-based services work a combination of morning and/or evening shifts, including alternate weekends, to meet the needs of the people we support.

Enhanced payments are available for sleep-ins, waking nights, and Sunday working.

About You

We're looking for people who are passionate about supporting children and young people to thrive.

You will bring:

  • A good standard of literacy and numeracy, along with basic IT skills.
  • A Level 3/4 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or equivalent), or a willingness to achieve this qualification within an agreed timeframe. Middlesbrough Council will cover the course fees.
  • Recent experience of supporting children or young people with additional needs and personal care. This may be from employment, volunteering, student placements, caring responsibilities, or personal experience.
  • Excellent communication, listening, and teamwork skills.
  • Emotional resilience, empathy, and the ability to build positive relationships.
  • Flexibility to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, bank holidays, waking nights, and sleep-ins where required in residential settings and commit to the rota in our community-based service.
About the Role

Working as part of a supportive and experienced team, you will help to create a safe, nurturing environment where children and young people can flourish.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Creating and maintaining a safe, caring, and supportive environment.
  • Building positive and trusting relationships with children and young people.
  • Supporting young people to develop independence, life skills, and confidence.
  • Encouraging participation in education, training, leisure activities, and community opportunities.
  • Supporting children and young people's emotional wellbeing and development.
  • Providing direct personal care where required.
  • Working closely with families, professionals, and colleagues to achieve positive outcomes.

This is an incredibly rewarding role where no two days are the same. You'll see first-hand the difference your support makes as children and young people overcome challenges, grow in confidence, and achieve their goals.

Why Join Middlesbrough Council?

We want Middlesbrough to be a place where all children are safe, happy, healthy, and able to fulfil their potential. By joining our team, you'll help us achieve that ambition.

  • Competitive salary with enhancements for nights, weekends, and sleep-in duties.
  • Generous annual leave entitlement plus bank holiday allowance.
  • Comprehensive induction and ongoing training.
  • Fully funded professional qualifications and development opportunities.
