Job Description
Job Purpose

The Welfare Officer will ensure that students in university residences have access to advice, guidance, and support, liaising with or escalating to specialist services as needed. You will meet and signpost students, connecting them with campus support teams such as Safeguarding, Security, Student Support Officers, Counselling, Disability Services, Financial Aid, and the SRC Advice Centre.

The role involves proactive outreach to promote healthy lifestyles, self-care, and assist students with various challenges. The position requires flexibility, including working on a rotating schedule with weekday/weekend hours (3pm to 11pm) and being on-call overnight approximately once every five weeks. Part-time and Job Share applications are welcome.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Respond to out-of-hours welfare requests across residences, ensuring support and escalation as necessary.
  2. Provide guidance and support to colleagues in Warden, Security, and Accommodation teams.
  3. Build partnerships with university services, SRC, and the community to enhance wellbeing support.
  4. Collaborate with Safeguarding and Security to assess and respond to risks.
  5. Facilitate conflict resolution and mediation among students.
  6. Deliver proactive responses to behavioural challenges, supporting the ResLife Strategy.
  7. Identify student needs through engagement with diverse groups and share insights with the team.
  8. Maintain effective communication with the Residence Life team during your shifts.
  9. Coordinate with Residence Assistant teams and other support units to promote welfare initiatives.
  10. Foster relationships with Accommodation teams in both university-managed and private residences.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
Essential
  • Ability to demonstrate competencies required for this level, gained through experience or relevant qualifications (SCQF level 8 or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of safeguarding, mental health, sexual violence, harassment, misconduct, and hate crime.
  • Familiarity with Glasgow’s cultural, social, educational landscape, and local emergency support services.
  • Understanding of crisis management principles, risk assessment, and working with support services.
Desirable
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and institutional policies on student welfare and safeguarding.
  • Professional membership in relevant disciplines (e.g., Social Work, Mental Health Nursing, Counselling).
Skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Organisational skills to manage multiple tasks.
  • Experience in advising and supporting students or young people.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and confidentiality (GDPR).
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Driver's license or working towards one.
Experience
  • Responding to welfare incidents and supporting distressed individuals.
  • Teamwork and supporting colleagues.
  • Following policies and procedures in welfare support settings.
  • Handling non-clinical wellbeing cases, especially with students.
Terms and Conditions
