ABOUT LGC NATIONAL LABORATORIES:

LGC’s National Laboratories deliver a range of expert science functions and services in partnership with the UK Government, business, healthcare, and academia. We manage and operate several national laboratories on behalf of government agencies, such as the UK National Measurement Laboratory (NML), MHRA Laboratories Team and National Reference Laboratories, as well as hosting the unique function of the ‘Government Chemist’.

As home to many world-leading scientists, LGC’s National Laboratories provide a wide range of expert analytical science services and subject matter expertise to a broad spectrum of customers, stakeholders, and global forums. In addition, we undertake contract research and development projects for a range of customers in both the public and private sectors. Our work addresses fundamental and emerging measurement challenges, helping to foster innovation and promoting productivity and economic growth.

At the UK National Measurement Laboratory (NML) for chemical and bio‑measurements, we deliver world‑leading measurement science to solve complex global challenges.

Within the NML, the Inorganic Analysis team is involved in a range of national and international research projects. They establish reference methodologies, high‑accuracy calibration, measurement services, and guidelines that support LGC’s position as the NML. The team also performs contract research and development projects for a broad spectrum of clients in the public and private sectors. Their setup includes an extensive variety of mass spectrometric techniques for elemental analysis, nanomaterials characterization, organo‑metallic speciation, isotope ratio measurements, and solid sampling and imaging applications. Instrumentation includes particle tracking analysis, multi‑angle dynamic and static light scattering, elemental analyzer‑IRMS, ESI MS/MS, and ICP‑MS (single and triple quadrupole, magnetic sector, time‑of‑flight, and multi‑collector) paired with LC, GC, asymmetrical flow field‑flow‑fractionation (AF4), gravitational field‑flow‑fractionation, and laser ablation.

The job holder will support the creation, improvement, and validation of analytical methods to aid NML work. This role focuses especially on quantitative LA‑ICPMS imaging and single cell ICPMS analysis. They must apply advanced instrumental techniques and use various sample preparation methods, with training provided.

Key responsibilities

  • Routine scheduling and management of complex metrology research and development projects related to imaging and single cell analysis, supported by line manager and senior scientists.
  • Support delivery, jointly with senior leads, of commercial/collaborative work related to quantitative LA‑ICPMS imaging.
  • Develop and complete analytical methodologies (ICPMS, Laser ablation, single cell) for quantitative elemental analysis.
  • Maintain written records in accordance with company quality procedures, and review colleagues' work to the same standard.
  • Provide presentations, training and advice to others to share findings and promote increased scientific understanding around analytical methodology.
  • Assist in maintaining equipment calibration, instrument preventive maintenance, and inventory management for imaging and single cell areas.
  • Follow relevant procedures and work instructions to ensure efficiency and compliance with quality and safety standards.
  • Stay informed about recent advancements in analytical techniques, new methodologies, and technologies related to LA‑ICPMS imaging and single cell analysis.

This is an excellent development opportunity for a candidate to further develop their career in the field by working with and receiving appropriate training from world‑recognised experts.

The successful candidate will have at least a PhD Degree (or equivalent experience) in chemical or analytical sciences. They should have an interest in or experience using hyphenated ICP‑MS for quantitative imaging and/or single cell analysis. Training will be provided on specific instruments as needed for this role.

Knowledge, skills and qualities

The successful candidate will be able to showcase the following attributes:

  • Enthusiastic and innovative scientist with a strong desire to develop their own technical abilities and support the development and delivery of the team’s research portfolio.
  • A strong history of completing complex and demanding research and development projects on time and within budget.
  • Proven experience and knowledge in applying various analytical methods and sample preparation techniques for quantitative imaging using mass spectrometry, such as ICPMS and laser ablation.
  • A rational approach to problem‑solving with strong attention to detail and ability to accurately record observations, data and conclusions during experimental investigations.
  • Self‑motivated great teammate with good organisational skills.
  • An appreciation of the importance of working within a quality system and knowledge of good laboratory practice.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written, with experience in independent writing of project reports and presentation of data.
  • A positive attitude to learning to use new technology and develop process improvements with a keen appetite for cross‑disciplinary work.
  • Metrology background with regards to method validation, measurement uncertainty calculation.
  • Experience with key statistics tools for data processing analysis for imaging experiments.
  • Familiarity with approaches for single cell analysis, including cell culture/handling.
