Job summary

University of Birmingham is seeking a part-time Laboratory Technician (0.5 FTE) to support research in the College of Medicine and Health, School of Medical Sciences. The role focuses on protein production, molecular biology, cell culture, and flow cytometry within a regenerative research program funded for sepsis therapies.

You will maintain safety, manage samples, and assist senior staff, with some out-of-hours work as required. The post is fixed-term to September 2029 in Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Qualifications

• NVQ, BTEC/ONC at level three or equivalent level three qualification with relevant experience.
• GCSE level 2 (A*- C/4-9) in mathematics and English or equivalent.
• Practical experience of the techniques and a working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice.
• Experience in a laboratory teaching or research environment or potential to participate in research projects.
• Understanding of Human Tissue Act and ability to comply with health and safety policies.

Responsibilities

• Protein production and purification using mammalian and bacterial systems.
• Molecular biology tasks such as mutagenesis and DNA extraction.
• Cell culture and flow cytometry work.
• Record keeping of techniques and experimental results.
• Adhere to SOPs and safety policies; contribute to audits and regulatory inspections.
