Job summary

University of Birmingham in Birmingham is seeking a part-time research support technician within the College of Medicine and Health, Infrastructure division. You will assist with protein production, cell culture, and molecular biology tasks supporting sepsis-related research projects.

Qualifications

• NVQ, BTEC/ONC level three or equivalent with relevant subject.
• GCSE level 2 (A*-C/4-9) in maths and English.
• Practical experience of the above techniques and a working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice.
• Experience in a laboratory-based teaching or research environment.
• Understanding of Human Tissue Act.
• Ability to organise and manage own workload after consultation with manager.
• Familiarity with general laboratory equipment (balances, pH meters, autoclaves, glassware, microscopes).
• Proactive approach to Health and Safety matters and communication skills.
• Good IT skills on Windows and/or Apple Macintosh OS.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical support for research activities using a wide range of techniques.
• Ensure the working area is safe and follow health and safety instructions.
• May operate outside normal hours to support research activity.
• Flexibly work in different areas of the department or wider University.
• Maintain accurate records of techniques and results.
• Support audits and regulatory inspections.
• Contribute to carbon reduction and energy-saving measures.
