Job description

Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Technician to join our team at Mitotype Precision Labs and contribute to pioneering research in the development of therapies for mitochondrial-related and neurodegenerative diseases. As a key member of our team, you will support all aspects of our cutting-edge therapeutic development projects partnered with pharmaceutical companies, utilising advanced techniques to evaluate effectiveness and toxicity. These include high-throughput imaging assays developed by Professor Heather Mortiboys, applied to patient-derived cell models, such as fibroblasts and induced neurons.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-growing start-up at the forefront of translational research, based in the state-of-the-art Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN). Job Description

Main Duties and Responsibilities

●Grow and maintain patient-derived fibroblasts, induced neuronal progenitor cells, induced neurons and induced glial cells

●Completing customer project cell-based assays and data analysis

●Maintain an accurate database of project results

●Interface with customers

●Maintain an accurate database of cell banks and chemical compounds

●Undertake technical tissue culture work, including keeping the room clean and tidy, cleaning incubators and hoods periodically and taking care of reagent stocks.

●Using, writing and amending Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (CoSHH) forms, Risk Assessments and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) under legal requirements.

●Provide assistance and information to users (e.g COSHH forms, Risk Assessments and Standard Operating Procedures) as appropriate to the grade, referring to experienced staff and/or line manager as necessary

●Prioritise own work within a general plan in conjunction with project leads to meet deadlines

●Carry out planning to ensure that periodic goals are met

●Maintain an accurate database

●Any other duties commensurate with the grade of this post

Person Specification

You should provide evidence in your application that you meet the following criteria. We will use a range of selection methods to measure your abilities in these areas, including reviewing your online application, seeking references, inviting shortlisted candidates to interview and other forms of assessment relevant to the post.

Essential criteria:

  1. Have a good honours degree (or equivalent experience).
  2. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, report writing skills, experience of delivering presentations, communicating to staff at all levels the organisation’s strategic plan and their personal contribution towards it
  3. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team to meet deadlines.
  4. Ability to develop creative approaches to problem solving.
  5. Ability to analyse and solve problems with an appreciation of longer-term implications.
  6. Ability to assess and organise resources, and plan and progress work activities.
  7. Attention to detail and a proven ability to keep accurate and reliable records.
  8. Good organisational and time management skills.

Desirable criteria:

  1. Experience of working in tissue culture
  2. Knowledge and understanding of mitochondrial assays
  3. Experience of reviewing individual progress and performance, and embedding organisational strategy into individual performance planning.
  4. Experience in developing and maintaining a network of contacts throughout own work area.
  5. Experience of adapting own skills to new circumstances.

About the Team

Join an inspiring and collaborative newly formed contract research organisation. Mitotype Precision Labs is a spin-out company from the University of Sheffield with a dedicated team of scientists, project leaders and commercial experts. Situated in the prestigious Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), a purpose-built research facility, which was opened in November 2010. The Institute houses clinical and basic scientists from the Department of Neuroscience and the primary focus is research into neurodegenerative disorders such as Motor Neurone Disease (MND), Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Reward Package

Salary for this grade: £26,000 - £30,000 per annum.

This post is permanent, with a 3-month probationary period.

This post is full-time: 35 hr week, with expected weekend work.
