Descripción de la vacante

SLB Cambridge Research in the UK seeks a creative Research Scientist to design and lead geothermal multi‑phase fluid dynamic experiments. The role focuses on validating mathematical models of fluid flow in enhanced geothermal systems and expanding to optimize system design.

The successful candidate will build and commission experiments at temperature and pressure, collaborate with modelers and domain experts, and present findings internally and at conferences.

Formación

  • PhD in Fluid mechanics or related field.
  • Experience in design of experimental rigs; building and commissioning experiments is essential.
  • Experience in particle tracking techniques is desirable.
  • Experience in heat transfer modelling or experiments is desirable.
  • Experience in data acquisition, signal processing, and data interpretation including data science approaches is desirable.
  • Experience in advanced instrumentation for multiphase flow measurements (laser-optical PLIF/PIV, electrical, ultrasonic, and nuclear techniques) is desirable.
  • CFD modelling of multiphase flows (OpenFOAM, COMSOL, Ansys) is desirable.
  • Relevant publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals are desirable.
  • Understanding of Geothermal Systems is desirable.

Responsabilidades

  • Design and execute multiphase fluid flow experiments (gas, liquid, solid) for geothermal research at SCR.
  • Collaborate with modellers and geothermal experts to build and validate models.

We are facing the world’s greatest balancing act- how to simultaneously reduce emissions and meet the world’s growing energy demands. We’re working on that answer. Every day, a step closer.

Our collective future depends on decarbonizing the fossil fuel industry, while innovating a new energy landscape. It’s what drives us. Ensuring progress for people and the planet, on the journey to net zero and beyond. For a balanced planet.

Our purpose: Together, we create amazing technology that unlocks access to energy for the benefit of all. You can find out more about us on https://www.slb.com/who-we-are

Location:

Cambridge, UK

SLB Cambridge Research (SCR) is part of SLB’s global network of research and engineering centres. SCR is a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment with state-of-the-art research and computing facilities. We work on applied research projects in the physical sciences to meet the current and future challenges of the industry.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a creative self-motivated Research Scientist to develop experiments for understanding the complex flow dynamics in geothermal systems. The initial focus will be on designing and leading experiments to validate mathematical models of fluid flow in enhanced geothermal systems.

The focus will then expand to lead the experiments to improve design and optimization of geothermal systems. The job will require experience in mechanical design, building, and commissioning of experiments at temperature and pressure.

The candidate will also need to work constructively and effectively in a multidisciplinary team with business and engineering teams to ensure their solutions have a significant impact. They will also present their work internally and externally.

Responsibilities:
  • Work in designing and executing multiphase fluid flow experiments (gas, liquid, and solid phases) to contribute to our research of geothermal systems at SCR
  • Work with modellers and geothermal domain experts to build and validate models and concepts
  • Engage and collaborate with SLB technical community
  • Ability to develop novel solutions to research and engineering problems, and articulate them to the technology team and management
  • Publish scientific papers, write patent applications and attend conferences
Qualifications:
  • PhD in Fluid mechanics or a related field
  • Experience in design of experimental rigs and expertise in building, and commissioning of experiments is essential
  • Experience in particle tracking techniques
  • Experience in heat transfer (modelling or experiments)
  • Experience in data acquisition, signal processing, and data interpretation including data science approaches is highly desirable
  • Experience in advanced instrumentation for multiphase flow measurements including laser-optical (PLIF, PIV), electrical, ultrasonic, and nuclear techniques is desirable
  • CFD modelling of multiphase flows (OpenFoam, COMSOL, Ansys) is desirable
  • Relevant publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals are desirable
  • Understanding of Geothermal Systems is desirable
