Job overview

This appointment is an excellent opportunity for an individual aiming for a career in Experimental Medicinetoadvancewithina supportiveenvironmentandgainexperience of clinicalresearchina leading clinical research organisation. The primary role of the post holder is to provide medical supportforclinicalstudiesindermatology,includingadvancedtherapiessuch as celland gene therapies, within the NIHR Clinical Research Facility (CRF) and clinical areas at NUH.

The post holder will work with experienced senior researchers supporting the implementation of patientandhealthyvolunteer-basedclinicaltrials inanestablishedclinicalacademicenvironmentthat benefits from both on-site acute medical services and experienced administrative support. You will also support risk assessments and risk mitigation strategies for new early phase studies including ATMP clinical trials.

Main duties of the job

• Supportthetimely deliveryofclinicalstudiestoacceptablemedicalstandards,in-line withthe requirements of sponsors, ICH GCP, and other appropriate guidelines and regulations.

• Providemedicalassessmentandcoverforstudies in Dermatology,workingalongsidethe Clinical team/CRF’s senior clinical team and nurse in charge for the day;

• InpartnershipwiththeCRFDirectorsandstaff,initiatedefinitivestrategiestoanticipateand expertly manage medical safety issues, including emergencies;

• Supportaspectsofsubjectrecruitment,includingpre-studymedicalhistories,informed consent, medical examinations for ongoing studies, dosing of study medication;

• Whererequired,providemedicalcoveroutside ofnormalworkinghours,asdeterminedby the nature of the studies being undertaken at the time;

• Acceptdelegatedresponsibilitytoensurethatassignedstudiesarecarriedout safely and in compliance with the protocol;

• Beresponsible forspecificstudy-relatedmedicaldecisionsasagreedwiththeStudyPrincipal Investigator;

• Perform clinical proceduresasappropriateto theassignedstudy(including,but not limited to, clinicalexaminationsortesting,insertionofintravenouslines,assessmentofadverseeventsand management of medical emergencies);

• Evaluateandmanageacute,sub-acuteandchronicadversedrugreactionsandmanage acute toxicological emergencies under the supervision of the consultants in charge.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Providemedicalinputandreviewofstudyprotocolsandotherrelatedstudy documentation and participate in research meetings, study review meetings, and meetings with the principal investigators and study sponsors;

• Maintainawarenessandkeepabreastoflatesttechnologiesinthemedicalfieldandshare that knowledge with the Quintiles Drug Research Unit clinical team and CRF team;

• Preparereportsforsubmissiontopharmaceuticalcompanies,regulatory bodies,andmedical and scientific journals as appropriate;

• Ensure personalTrustmandatorytrainingisuptodateandsupportthetrainingofmedical, nursing and ancillary staff as required;

• Assistwithbusinessdevelopmentactivitiesasappropriateincludingthedevelopmentand maintenance of professional relationships with local opinion leaders and other GSTT/KCL departments;

• Developandmaintaincomputerskillstoutiliseavailablesystemsfortheefficient management and administration of the day to day activities of the CRF;

• AnyotherdutiesasmaybedeemedreasonablebytheCRF Directors.

Person specification
Training and Qualification
  • MBBS or equivalent with full valid GMC Registration and hold a licence to practise
  • Recent ALS training allowing direct medical responsibility for human investigations in the UK
  • Completed Core Medical Training
  • Portfolio demonstrating continuous personal, professional and academic development
  • Postgraduate specialist qualification eg MRCP or equivalent.
Experience
  • A minimum of 2 years post-registration experience.
  • Experience of supervising/training others
  • Experience in the conduct of clinical pharmacology studies.
