Job summary

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Research Nurse to join the Surgical Research Team. This is a patient-facing post delivering a broad portfolio of clinical studies, both commercial and non-commercial, across surgical specialties.

You will work to ICH Good Clinical Practice, identify and support patients through their research participation, and supervise junior staff, with opportunities for professional development within a large, research-active NHS

Qualifications

• Registered Nurse with appropriate branch registration.
• Diploma level education with commitment to degree-level study.
• Meets NMC mentorship requirements and holds a current driving licence if relevant.
• Masters level qualifications are advantageous.

Clinical research is the scientific study of health and the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness. At Newcastle Hospitals, clinical research happens within most clinical specialties, wherever patients are seen and care for. Clinical research can make a real difference to health outcomes. Not only is it important for advancements in treatment, but it has been proven that patients cared for in a research-active organisation have better outcomes. In an average year we recruit around 13,000 research participants into a broad range of research studies and trials. The set up and delivery of trials is supported by around 400 members of staff who are part of the Clinical Research Directorate. Main duties of the job

The Surgical Research Team works closely with the clinical service to deliver a range of commercial and non-commercial surgical studies This is a clinical patient facing post, which requires a dynamic individual who can work both individually and as part of a team. By identifying and supporting patients through their research participation the post holders will play a crucial role in the delivery of a broad portfolio of clinical trials.

Job responsibilities

• To participate in the creation and maintenance of a high-quality clinical research environment.
• To initiate and manage nursing activities related to academic studies and clinical trials, from initiation to termination, according to ICH good clinical practice guidelines.
• Supervise junior members of the team.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Education

• Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch)
• Academic attainment at diploma level and prepared to undertake degree level study
• Meets Nursing and Midwifery council requirements for mentorship
• Current driving licence if relevant to role
• Academic attainment at degree/masters' level

Knowledge & Experience

• An understanding of the application of research in the clinical governance agenda
• An understanding of research governance and the research process
• Substantial post registration experience in clinical speciality area and/or clinical research delivery
• Evidence of research activity and ability to demonstrate research competency
• Experience of working within speciality
• Experience of supporting clinical research delivery
• Experience of supporting clinical research delivery
• Experience of mentoring junior staff
• Evidence of current role expansion that can be applied to the role
• Experience of project management

Skills & Abilities

• Excellent IT knowledge/skills
• Advanced interpersonal and communication skills
• Advanced clinical skills (i.e., venepuncture, cannulation, ECG)
• High level of organisation and time management skills
• Ability to work on own initiative
