Brunel University London invites applications for a Research Fellow / Research Assistant to work on the UKRI-funded climate-resilient energy project (RENEW) within the Brunel Interdisciplinary Power Systems (BIPS) centre. The role requires a PhD in a relevant area and expertise in energy system modelling, optimisation, and related fields.

The College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences (CEDPS) is one of the largest and most successful in the UK, with close to 5,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students. Department of Engineering is a vibrant and successful Department within CEDPS.

Position Title: Research Fellow / Research Assistant

Research Centre: Brunel Interdisciplinary Power Systems (BIPS)

Salary: Grade R1

Research Assistant: £37,810 to £40,956 per annum inclusive of London Weighting

Research Fellow: £42,068 to £49,478 per annum inclusive of London Weighting with potential to progress to £53,766 per annum, inclusive of London Weighting, through sustained exceptional contribution.

Hours: Full-time

Planned start date: 1 February 2027

Contract Type: Fixed term for 12 months

We are looking to recruit a Research Fellow / Research Assistant to work on the project “Climate Resilient Heat Electrification for Net-Zero Emission Whole Energy Systems (RENEW)”, funded by UKRI and carried out in collaboration with Newcastle University and Imperial College London. The project is coordinated by Dr Marko Aunedi on behalf of Brunel University of London in the UK.

Applicants are expected to hold a PhD in an appropriate area and have expertise in one or more of the following areas: energy system modelling and optimisation, power system analysis, renewable energy, transmission and distribution system operation, energy storage, low-carbon energy technologies or other closely related areas. You will be a self-motivated, but highly collaborative researcher. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, fluency in English and an ability to work independently are essential. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a good track record in project management, presenting their work, report writing and research publications. Outstanding candidates without a PhD but having directly relevant research or practical experience are also welcome to apply.
