Job description

FTE:1 (35 hours/week)

Term:Fixed (36 months)

We are seeking an experienced research engineer in software/firmware for sensors to join the CUE Robotics Team at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a dynamic, fast-paced environment, working alongside experts in robotics and automation. The role offers exceptional access to world-class laboratory facilities and cutting-edge technologies, placing you at the forefront of innovative research and development.

This position will play a key role in a small team developing novel automated inspection systems for the UK’s next-generation submarine fleet, with a particular focus on the inspection of structural components, tanks, and pipework. We are looking for a candidate with substantial professional engineering experience (including working to standards) to complement the research strengths of the existing team.

To be considered for this role, you will hold a PhD in engineering or equivalent. You should have a proven track record of delivering complex engineering projects, with hands-on expertise in software design and architecture, system integration, project management, and technical documentation. The role involves regular travel to partner sites for meetings and demonstrations, so applicants must be willing and able to travel. A valid UK driving licence and access to a vehicle would be advantageous.

This is a full-time, fixed-term post for an initial period of three years, with the potential for extension subject to future funding. The role is based at the University’s city centre campus in Glasgow.

Whilst a Post-Doctoral Research Associate is ideally sought for this position; applications from candidates who are close to PhD completion or whose award is pending, are welcome. In such circumstances, the appointment will be made at Research Assistant level (RS06 salary scale £ 32,546 -£ 36,130) and duties will be adjusted to reflect the grade of the post. This will continue until the PhD award is confirmed, at which point the duties and grade will be revised accordingly.

Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Professor Gordon Dobie, (gordon.dobie@strath.ac.uk).
