The University of Manchester Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies seeks a postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) to work on data collection and processing for the BA/Leverhulme Small Grant-funded project titled “Translation as Method in Global Mental Health”.
The project, titled “Translation as Method in Global Mental Health”, is run by Dr Anna Strowe (PI) from the Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies and Dr Richard Fay (Co-I) from the Manchester Institute for Education. It aims to assess how Translation and Interpreting (T&I) are used in GMH research and how that use is reported and understood as part of the methodology. The project runs from 1 July 2025 to 1 March 2026, with two main outputs: a bibliometric analysis and a discourse analysis of discussions on language and translation in the dataset. Data collection will mainly occur from July to September, with analysis and writing in the autumn and winter.
The PDRA position involves 240 hours, primarily July-September, with flexible scheduling. The candidate will establish parameters for collecting a corpus of recent research articles in GMH and protocols for processing and coding them, under supervision. Data collection is mainly from July to September 2025. Depending on scheduling, the candidate may also contribute to analysis and writing from October to February, and will be credited as a co-author for data collection and processing.
The ideal candidate will have research experience (PhD or equivalent) in translation studies, global mental health, applied linguistics, or related fields, and be comfortable navigating academic journals and papers.
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit a sample of academic writing via email before the interview, which will be scheduled within one to two weeks after the closing date.
This role is not eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route; candidates must demonstrate their right to work in the UK.
Research staff will have access to the University of Manchester’s Researcher Development resources.
