Job summary

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) invites applications for a Research Associate in Artificial Intelligence to join the Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies Research Institute (AIDTRI). The role focuses on advancing AI and data science research, developing novel AI methods, and supporting external funding bids.

The post involves working with multidisciplinary teams, publishing results, and contributing to initiatives aligned with LJMU Strategy 2030.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline, or have submitted your thesis and be awaiting viva.
  • Experience in conducting and publishing high-quality AI research.
  • Strong knowledge of AI algorithms and programming experience in Python, R or similar.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct high-quality research in AI and Data Science.
  • Organise, harmonise and analyse large, multimodal and multi-source datasets.
  • Develop and evaluate AI methods.
  • Collaborate with internal and external research partners.
  • Prepare research papers and conference contributions.
  • Contribute to external research funding applications.
  • Support research management and activities within AIDTRI.

The School of Computer Science and Mathematics is dedicated to producing research that has real-world application, boasting specialisms in immersive technologies, applications of artificial intelligence, trustworthy computing technologies and data science.

We are seeking to appoint a Research Associate in Artificial Intelligence to join the Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies Research Institute (AIDTRI).

AIDTRI brings together multidisciplinary expertise in AI and advanced digital technologies, with research spanning fundamental methodological development through to real-world application and evaluation. Key areas include AI, data science, trustworthy and explainable AI, causal AI, digital twins, immersive technologies, data visualisation and advanced computational modelling.

You will contribute to current AI and data science research programmes and to the development of new externally funded research.

Key activities will include:

  • conducting high-quality research in AI and Data Science;
  • organising, harmonising and analysing large, multimodal and multi-source datasets;
  • developing and evaluating AI methods;
  • collaborating with internal and external research partners;
  • preparing research papers and conference contributions;
  • contributing to external research funding applications; and
  • supporting research management and activities within AIDTRI.

You should hold a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline, or have submitted your thesis and be awaiting viva.

Essential criteria include experience of conducting and publishing high-quality AI research, strong knowledge of AI algorithms, programming experience in Python, R or similar, excellent communication and organisational skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Experience with large and complex AI problems, novel AI or computational methods, advanced Python programming, and research funding proposals would be advantageous.

You should clearly demonstrate in your supporting statement how you meet all essential criteria in the person specification, providing specific evidence and examples for each criterion. Evidence against the desirable criteria should also be provided where applicable.

We anticipate holding interviews no later than the first week of October 2026.
