Job summary

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) invites applications for a Research Associate in Artificial Intelligence to join the AI and Digital Technologies Research Institute (AIDTRI). The role focuses on high-impact AI research and data science, contributing to funded projects and collaborating across disciplines.

We seek a PhD holder with strong AI expertise, Python/R programming, and excellent communication skills to work both independently and with teams within AIDTRI.

Qualifications

  • PhD in AI, data science, computer science, mathematics, physics or related discipline or submitted thesis awaiting viva.
  • Experience conducting and publishing high-quality AI research and knowledge of AI algorithms.
  • Programming experience in Python, R or similar; strong communication and organisational skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct high-quality AI research and publish findings.
  • Organise, harmonise and analyse large, multimodal datasets.
  • Develop and evaluate AI methods and collaborate with partners.
  • Prepare research papers and conference contributions; contribute to external funding proposals.

The School of Computer Science and Mathematics is dedicated to producing research that has real-world application, boasting specialisms in immersive technologies, applications of artificial intelligence, trustworthy computing technologies and data science.

We are seeking to appoint aResearch Associate in Artificial Intelligenceto join theArtificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies Research Institute (AIDTRI).

AIDTRI brings together multidisciplinary expertise in AI and advanced digital technologies, with research spanning fundamental methodological development through to real-world application and evaluation. Key areas includeAI, data science, trustworthy and explainable AI, causal AI, digital twins, immersive technologies, data visualisation and advanced computational modelling.

You will contribute to current AI and data science research programmes and to the development of new externally funded research.

Key activities will include:

  • conducting high-quality research in AI and Data Science;
  • organising, harmonising and analysing large, multimodal and multi-source datasets;
  • developing and evaluating AI methods;
  • collaborating with internal and external research partners;
  • preparing research papers and conference contributions;
  • contributing to external research funding applications; and
  • supporting research management and activities within AIDTRI.

You should hold aPhD in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline, or have submitted your thesis and be awaiting viva.

Essential criteria include experience of conducting and publishing high-quality AI research, strong knowledge of AI algorithms, programming experience inPython, R or similar, excellent communication and organisational skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Experience with large and complex AI problems, novel AI or computational methods, advanced Python programming, and research funding proposals would be advantageous.

You should clearly demonstrate in your supporting statement how you meet all essential criteria in the person specification, providing specific evidence and examples for each criterion.Evidence against the desirable criteria should also be provided where applicable.

We anticipate holding interviewsno later than the first week of October 2026.
