Job Description

Job Title: Research and Chemical Technician

Contract Length: 3 Months - possible extension

Location: London - onsite

Salary: £22.79 per hour

Hours: 8am - 6pm

Lead on the management of hazardous waste disposal via waste procedures; ensuring that materials from the laboratories within the Chemical Engineering Department are correctly and safely disposed of.

Responsibilities include:

1. Arrange a chemical waste collection to remove unsorted/legacy chemicals from waste cabinets and labs.
2. Work with EIL, Department Management, and Safety teams to enforce and monitor safety procedures in the labs.
3. Act as a Deputy Departmental Safety Officer, conducting duties to ensure compliance with regulations and legislation.
4. Assist safety manager with regular lab checks to monitor compliance with departmental procedures, policies, and legal requirements.
5. Help researchers and technical staff in writing risk and COSHH assessments for equipment and experiments.
6. Advise and assist with the safe storage of chemicals and hazardous substances.
7. Procure and ensure proper use of PPE in the laboratories.
8. Oversee fire, health, and safety regulations; trained as a Fire Evacuation Marshal and First Aider.
9. Arrange fire safety tours for new starters and existing staff (Bloomsbury).
10. Check and restock department's first aid kits as necessary (Bloomsbury).
11. Perform monthly AED checks.
12. Check fire extinguishers and fire doors.
13. Provide safety advice to staff and students, including researchers from other departments.
14. Review departmental general/generic risk assessments.
15. Manage controlled materials, flammable gases, offsite work coordination, safety signage updates, and maintenance.
